The Toyota Land Cruiser has proven to be a very popular classic SUV. And while there are plenty to choose from, many of them have been ridden hard and put away wet, yielding a variety of cosmetic and mechanical issues. But not this one. This 1976 FJ40 has been through a full frame-off restoration and is in excellent condition throughout. It’s about as nice as you’ll find.
This Land Cruiser was restored by a shop with more than 40 years of experience in the business. The two-year project was a complete nut-and-bolt effort completed in 2023. The photo gallery shows the starting point which was a decent but thoroughly used vehicle with many needs. It was stripped down to bare metal and properly rebuilt from front to back, top to bottom. The frame received a protective coating while the body was repainted its original code 532 Yellow. Everywhere you look shows a high degree of restoration; seals, glass, emblems, fasteners, etc. The old winch was also serviced, and a complete new set of five wheels with the correct hub cap tabs was installed along with new tires.
The 4.2L 6-cylinder engine was rebuilt and runs perfectly. Upgrades include an electronic distributor, Weber carburetor, and Tri-Mil header. There is also an aluminum radiator for improved cooling. The balance of the factory drivetrain includes a 4-speed manual transmission along with a 2-speed transfer case and Warn hubs in front. Other equipment includes power steering and power front disc brakes. There is an abundance of new parts throughout!
The interior also looks fantastic. Metal surfaces are a big part of the FJ40 cabin, so the quality paint and body work are reflected here as well. The two front seats have been replaced with more comfortable and supportive pieces from Corbeau, while the rear jump seats were recovered. The factory dash offers a basic set of gauges, all of which function properly. The Fasten Belts / Brake / EGR indicators below the dash are not connected however. All lights work as do the turn signals, wipers, horn, and AM radio. Front and rear heaters are also present and a small tachometer has been installed.
The classic 4x4 market can be a lot of fun, and the FJ40 continues to be a hit therein with some recent sales nearing $300k. This fully restored example costs far less while providing both a great looking vehicle and a very capable SUV.
