For Sale: 1988 BMW 528e in Elyria, Ohio

Vehicle Description

A 1988 BMW 528E is a silver-finished example powered by a 3.0-liter S50 inline-six that drives the rear wheels via a replacement five-speed manual transmission with an aftermarket clutch and flywheel as well as a limited-slip differential with gearing reportedly sourced from an E36 M3. The car rides on 17″ Style 5 alloy wheels and adjustable BC Racing coil-over shocks and is further equipped with a Mishimoto radiator, a custom-fabricated exhaust system, yellow fog lights, a sunroof, tinted windows, an M Tech 1 steering wheel, a Bluetooth-capable Alpine head unit, a trunk-mounted subwoofer, and replacement power-adjustable front seats upholstered in black leather. The car has been registered in New Jersey, Florida, and California and acquired by the seller in 2023.

Comes with service records, a Carfax report, and a clean title.

The car left the factory finished in Salmon Silver Metallic (203), and the seller states it was repainted in 2017. Exterior details include Euro-style headlights, yellow fog lamps, a sunroof, black bodyside moldings, power-adjustable side mirrors, and tinted windows. The Carfax report contains entries from December 2007 and June 2010 that describe accidents with other vehicles, which respectively resulted in damage to the front and the right side of the car. Additional entries from March 2019 and January 2020 describe “minor damage” to the front and rear. Photos provided in the gallery show a crack in the windshield, bubbling paint on the sunroof, delaminating trim on the front bumper, and weathered seals on the windshield and heated rear glass. The seller notes that the door trim is loose.

E39-sourced 17″ Style 5 alloy wheels are mounted with 235/45 Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes and the car rides on adjustable BC Racing coil-over shocks. Power steering was added in September 2019 and work in May 2023 involved installing hub centering rings and replacing the idler arm and front wheel bearings. A March 2022 service record notes that the front upper control arm bushings should be replaced.

The replacement power-adjustable front seats and the rear bench are upholstered in black leather, and the cabin is further appointed with color-coordinated carpeting and door panels, an onboard computer, patterned floor mats, and power-operated windows. A sound system comprised of a Bluetooth-capable Alpine head unit, a trunk-mounted subwoofer, and aftermarket speakers was installed under current ownership. The cracked dashboard is covered by a cloth pad and the car is not equipped with air conditioning, though the seller notes that the A/C lines remain in place. Photos provided in the gallery show a tear on the driver’s seat upholstery as well as cracks and blemishes on the seating surfaces.

The M Tech 1 steering wheel frames a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,100-rpm redline as well as auxiliary gauges for instant fuel economy, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 283k miles, approximately 2k of which were added by the seller. True mileage is unknown.

The 3.0-liter S50 inline-six was reportedly sourced from a 1995 M3 and was overhauled prior to the 2017 installation that utilized Classic Daily mounts. Electrical work at that time involved adapting the wiring harness and relocating the battery to the trunk. The engine is equipped with a Spectre open-element air cleaner, an electric fan, and a Mishimoto radiator, which was installed in September 2022. Work in March 2022 involved changing the oil, re-sealing the fuel pump and the fuel-level sending unit, and replacing the water pump, thermostat housing seal, fuel filter, and fuel lines.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a replacement ZF five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential with 3.23:1 gearing reportedly sourced from an E36 M3. The transmission and differential were installed concurrently with a Valeo single-mass flywheel and clutch kit. A custom-fabricated exhaust system with an aftermarket muffler and resonator is in place. A March 2022 service record shows the transmission and differential fluids were changed at that time, and the record notes worn rear subframe bushings and weakened engine and transmission mounts. Corrosion is visible on underside components.

The Carfax report shows the aforementioned damage reports from December 2007, June 2010, March 2019, and January 2020, and lists history in California, New Jersey, and Florida from an initial entry in November 1991. A potential odometer rollback is noted in a December 2017 entry.
