Here is a numbers-matching 1969 El Camino SS396.  This is a real-deal L35 SS with its original Protect-O-Plate.  It has seen a great deal of recent body-off restoration work and looks fantastic with its LeMans Blue paint and black accents.  It is also sounds the part and is great fun to drive.  Throw in factory air conditioning and a hard tonneau cover and you’ve got a vehicle you can really use as well.

Built at the Kansas City plant in November 1968, this El Camino was originally purchased by L. Cook of Sesser, IL.  It then made its way to Georgia before heading to Wisconsin where it was restored from 2022-2024.  The body was removed from the frame and any rusty sheetmetal was removed and replaced.  Be sure to see the underside pictures on this one; they don’t always look so clean!  The body was repainted in the original code 71 LeMans Blue with proper SS striping, and the brightwork and chrome were addressed as well.  It also received a vinyl top and locking tonneau cover.  The car rides on Magnum 500 wheels with new Cooper Cobra tires all around.

Under the hood is the numbers-matching 396ci 325hp L35 engine.  It was completely rebuilt in 1999 along with the TH400 automatic transmission (24k miles since).  A recent tune-up was just performed and a new carburetor and HEI distributor installed.  The exhaust was redone as well with new Flowmaster mufflers.  The rear end is the original CX-code 3.07 12-bolt which was rebuilt during the restoration.  There is an abundance of new parts throughout the brake, steering, and suspension systems, contributing to the car’s nice road manners.

The black interior was converted from fabric to vinyl and remains mostly stock.  Dual bucket seats flank the center console with horseshoe shifter.  Lap and shoulder belts are present for both occupants.  The SS steering wheel, door panels, and dashboard are all correct too.  A trio of underdash gauges is present for more accurate readings.  The lights, turn signals, horn, wipers, washers, and parking brake all work properly.  So do the heater, defroster, and air conditioning.  There is also an aftermarket digital radio that fits within the original dash opening.

Like the Chevelle, there are many El Caminos on the market.  So many of these have been ridden hard and put away wet, while others are base units disguised as SS models.  This example is neither of those things.  It is in great condition and is the real deal as evidenced by the POP and numbers-matching engine.  And while all that is great to have in a classic Chevrolet, the best part of an El Camino may be its utility.  There aren’t many other vehicles where you can look so good as you load the bed with whatever you need, fire up the big block engine, and rumble on down the road.
