Vehicle Description
2001 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
"I can't imagine too many better ways to have fun on a racetrack in
a street legal car for what he's spent. You could buy three '99
fixed roof coupes for the price of a new Stingray, which means you
could crash two of them learning your track day craft. Yeah, that's
a crazy idea, but a good C5 is a very sane choice indeed". In a
2013 article in Road and Track titled "The C5 is Still Brilliant
After All These Years" the writer champions the performance bargain
of the C5. Today, you can buy four C5's for the price of a new
Stingray, and the things that made them brilliant in 2013 prevail
today.
For consignment, a 2001 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe with a title
verified 32,157 actual miles, owned by our consignor since 2011,
and kept in immaculate condition with some cosmetic enhancements
under the hood and an aftermarket exhaust system.
Exterior
One of the more eye catching for the C5 is this Millenium Yellow, a
two stage representation of the sun on four wheels. The aerodynamic
nose is embedded with a mesh style grille and corner marker lights,
low, narrow, and aggressive. From the side, this sleek yellow shark
is a long rounded wedge and the requisite fender vents are
vestigial reminders of classic Corvettes, including those that
carried a contrasting cove along the side. From there, flush door
handles are mirrored in shape by the rear marker and ovals abound,
winding up on the rear fascia as four red tail lights and an
elongated third brake light, all richly contrasting with the yellow
paint. Not to be outdone by body trim, the exhaust tips are also
slight ovals and fit the contoured valance like a key. Chrome five
spoke Corvette wheels are staggered from the factory, 17-inch in
front and 18-inch in back and wear 45 series Z rated tires of
differing widths. Minor chin scuffs and a tiny bit of curb rash are
the only exterior imperfections.
Interior
We go from bright yellow to standard, monochromatic black on the
inside, a race bred cavern that begins with simple and smooth door
panels on which only a red reflector stands out in contrast. Black
leather bucket seats are notable for their side support and tall
padded, integrated headrest and both are in nice condition. Black
leather wraps the thick steering wheel which frames the concise and
easy to read instruments, white lettering illuminated on a black
background, but don't forget about the optional head's up display!
Rounded buttons are nice to the touch on the center stack where
they occupy the AM/FM/Cassette radio and the climate panel, both
with digital green readouts. The near pristine center console
houses the fun stick, a manual shifter with black ball handle
dressed in a black leather boot and ready for a night out on the
town! Corvette embroidered carpeted mats protect the black carpet
underneath. The headliner on the targa is in great shape, while the
visors show a few dimples in their foam undercoat.
Drivetrain
Pivoting the hood forward reveals the clean 5.7 liter LS1 V8,
producing 350 horsepower and adorned now with yellow engine covers
enhanced with red writing, matching the red inlet hose with yellow
clamps, a nice bit of customization that stands out. A T56 6-speed
manual backs the LS1 up and keeps power at the rear with 3.42 gears
and limited slip. Power disc brakes are found on all four
corners.
Undercarriage
Smooth belly pans dominate the real estate on the clean underside
where we're not seeing surface rust or any errant fluids. The dual
exhaust runs through a MagnaFlow system just before exiting via
four chrome tips. Suspension consists of independent unequal length
double wishbones with transverse composite monoleaf springs and
monotube shocks.
Drive-Ability
No surprises here as this low mileage beauty performs with the
usual highlights. A comfortable cabin, power on demand, and
rail-like handling. Our test sheet came back with a bunch of goose
eggs, meaning nothing was notably wrong and all functions operated
just as the boys in Bowling Green intended. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Tastier than a lemonhead, more satisfying than the golden arches,
and reflecting better than a buttercup. Just because yellow traffic
lights cause you to slow down doesn't mean this yellow rocket can't
be driven fast. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the best
performance bargain in the house has just arrived and now's your
chance to grab a piece of the sun. Icarus be damned, this one is
worth the ride!
