Vehicle Description
1965 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible
"For starters, the LTD was a trim package for the Galaxie 500 when
launched in 1965. And not surprisingly, Car And Driver just
expected to discover a tarted up Ford during testing. It turned out
there was more to the vehicle, with Dearborn having done its work
to make the LTD feel like no other Ford before. Buyers at the time
did feel the difference from previous years, and while the as quiet
as a Rolls Royce ads may have struck some as questionable, there
was truth to the idea of 'accessible luxury' the LTD offered.
Curbsideclassic.com
For consignment a 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 convertible with a title
verified 96,255 actual miles. Owned by our consignor since 2009 and
restored by the previous owner some time before that. Since at
least 2009, the car has been garaged and never driven in the
rain.
Exterior
Rangoon Red in two stage richness covers straight steel panels
while the contrasting white canvas convertible top of this big car
has a steeply raked C-pillar. The slab sided beauty has a stainless
trim piece that covers the midline from stem to stern, underscoring
the Galaxie 500 badge on the front fender. Stacked headlights
flanks a horizontally grated grille with an offset badge to the
left over a laser straight chrome bumper. 15-inch wheels wear
proper hubcaps, and the rear is 50% obstructed by fender skirts
aimed at aerodynamics but resulting in a cool profile. Out back, we
find squared off tail lights with a center round backup light
accented by starburst trim also over a straight bumper which throws
shadow on twin chrome exhaust tips that exit at an outward angle.
With the top down, a soft, red tonneau covers the stored roof for a
clean, aerodynamic look. Imperfections include a missing rear
window, some uneven filler, and a crack in paint.
Interior
With a swing of either of the 2 doors allow us to greet red vinyl
door panels with both smooth and stitched sections along with
streamlined hardware and armrest, both presenting in very good
condition. Bench seats, split up front and standard in back are
wrapped in yards of red vinyl that remains in great shape and
includes bright red seat belts. The red on red continues up front
with a red plastic steering wheel and a red dash framing a black
faced speedometer, black faced AM/FM radio, and black paneled
switch gear on the mid dash. In front of the passenger, the dash is
bottom trimmed in metal which takes in a couple of vents. Fantastic
red carpet floods the floors protected by, yes, red carpeted mats
embroidered in white with GALAXIE 500, all in great shape. Under
the decklid, the trunk has been finished in gray cloth and houses a
spare.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a clean blue painted 330ci truck V8 from 1974,
fueled with a 4-barrel and backed by a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic
transmission. Power is routed to the Ford 9 inch in back with 3.00
gears and power drum brakes are found front and rear. Power
steering is also onboard.
Undercarriage
A clean underside where surface rust is mostly reserved for the
exhaust pipes and only a few drops of oil are seen on the pan. That
exhaust is of dual configuration and connects to glasspack style
mufflers before snaking its way over the rear axle and then out the
back. Suspension is standard with coil springs up front and a 4
link with coil springs out back.
Drive-Ability
We were warned it might be hard to start if sitting too long, but
it came to life without much provocation as we slipped it into
Drive and headed out to do our duty! 75 series tires help absorb
road imperfections and the big car tracks straight as we pilot the
Ford from a monochromatic red cabin. Overall, it drives like a
mechanically well maintained survivor and we note the reverse
lights and AC are not working. But all other items operate as
intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Whether LTD stands for Luxury Trim Decor or Limited doesn't matter
much 60 years later, because this well sorted Galaxie is as classic
as the day is long and makes quite a presence in its white topped
red on red presentation. Temps are going up and that means tops are
coming down and what a perfect time to pick up this big cruiser,
maybe join a Ford club or two, and enjoy the open road in this
impressive convertible.
