Vehicle Description
1978 Chevrolet K10 Scottsdale StepsideShort Bed Pickup
The model year 1960 brought the Chevrolet pickup into the modern
era with its C/K series lineup. The "C" designation identified two
wheel drive pickups, and the "K" identified 4X4s. The most common
pickup was the C10, a half ton truck with a 6.5 or 8 foot cargo
box. The C/K series trucks remained essentially the same vehicle
during a series of conservative redesigns, until 1997, when the
1998 Silverado replaced it. In 1978, trim packages included Custom
Deluxe, Scottsdale, Cheyenne, and Silverado, each building on the
former with more features.
For consignment, a 1978 Chevrolet K10 Scottsdale Stepside shortbed
showing 10,033 miles but the true miles are unknown. As the '78
brochure proclaimed, "Stepside styling not only presents a
distinctive look, but it is also a big help in working cargo from
the side".Stepsides have become the desired configuration for these
classic trucks and a short bed is a major plus!
Exterior
Sixteen base colors were available in 1978 and this truck wears
single stage Midnight Blue and when many trucks were multi toned or
white cabbed, this is a standout in its monochromatic profile. The
standard grille has been replaced with a purely horizontal unit and
the Chevrolet bowtie is gone, but the square body design and
headlights are unmistakably Chevrolet. A tinted, sliding rear
window looks over a very nice bed with oak planks and stainless
rails and beyond the tailgate, we get a straight chrome bumper over
twin angle cut chrome exhaust tips and a trailer hitch. 15-inch
Chevrolet Rally wheels are deep and hold 32x11.50R15LT tires that
fit the raised profile well, while large side mirrors also divert
from the blue coverage with polished metal. We're not sure when
this truck was painted but we couldn't find any imperfections in
our walk around and photo session.
Interior
Bright trim is part of the Scottsdale trim package and appears on
the door panels which are in good condition although we note a
crack in the plastic frame of the passenger side. The ribbed velour
of the front bench, in blue, is also package specific and shows
here with a small tear in the vinyl of an otherwise clean seat. The
standard steering wheel now frames a tachometer on the column in
front of Chevrolet's clean and concise gauge cluster that combines
two large dials with smaller ones on the left. On the right, we
have the A/C panel and an AM/FM/Cassette radio that will take you
right back to 1978, push buttons and all! We note some cracking on
the dash pad and no worries there as aftermarket support is very
good for square bodies. Plush blue carpet covers the floor with the
shifter rising from the transmission hump, along with the range
selector of shorter status. Up above, painted steel makes up the
headliner, or lack thereof.
Drivetrain
Chrome valve covers and air filter element highlight the 350ci V8
under the hood in otherwise clean, driver quality. An Edelbrock
4-barrel carb is on top and a 4-speed manual with creeper gear sets
the truck into motion, splitting power between the 12 bolt rear and
front 10 bolt differentials. Power brakes are supplied in the form
of front discs and rear drums. In short, the engine bay houses PS,
PB, and AC.
Undercarriage
Nice and clean and dry underneath where we find dual exhaust
running through FlowMaster mufflers on their way to chrome tips at
the back. Suspension consists of leaf springs front and rear. We
don't see any errant fluids nor grease build up, and an absence of
surface rust makes for a rare trifecta indeed!
Drive-Ability
As the country song goes, "there's something about a truck" and as
we hop up into this vintage 4x4, it becomes immediately obvious
what the appeal is. The ride height gives you a commanding view of
the road, and to whatever is on Karen's passenger seat. The 350
pulls this truck with some authority, there is no want for more
power as it gets the job done with plenty of oomph. We note the
tachometer and air conditioning are not working but all other
functional items operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Just a clean and well sorted K10 with lots of originality and
vintage charm. Plus, a pretty capable drivetrain with potential
power to both axles when needed, and low gears to get you out of
trouble when a random mud bog or snow drift gets in your way. But
of course, you'll probably save this for fair weathered rides and
why not, a once common truck is now a real classic and part of a
hot genre that causes K10 to stay at the mall just long enough to
cool down from our test drive. So, step on up if this one piques
your interest!
