It's hard to believe that the third-generation Dodge Challenger is
already coming close to being eligible for classic car insurance,
but time sometimes flies faster than even these modern muscle cars.
This particular 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT-8 First Edition comes to
us with just 16,396 miles on its odometer, and an individually
numbered dashboard plaque to commemorate the beginning of its late
model rebirth. With its original Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl
exterior paint and carbon fiber hood stripe adorning its original
body panels, this SRT-8 shows only the slightest hints that it has
been around for nearly two decades.
Inside, this Challenger demonstrates that speed and comfort are not
mutually exclusive concepts, as they were in previous generations.
Well-bolstered, plush, heated, and power-adjustable bucket seats
hold both the driver and passenger in place for the ride of their
lives. Power locks, windows, mirrors, air conditioning, cruise
control, and navigation add all the modern amenities required to
enjoy this car every day. A four-pod set of white-faced gauges sits
directly in front of the driver, featuring a 180-mph speedometer
and an 8,000 rpm tachometer. Don't forget the power sunroof
overhead to allow you to enjoy even more of the open air with the
touch of a button.
Under the hood, we find a naturally aspirated 6.1-liter Hemi V-8
engine, believed to be the original to the car. From the factory,
this first year SRT-8 pumped out a stout 425 horsepower and 420
pound-feet of torque. That power is funneled through a five-speed
automatic transmission before being sent out to five-spoke wheels
shod in 255/45R-20 low-profile rubber out back, while a
power-assisted set of staggered 245/45R-20s handles steering duties
up front. For some perspective, Dodge tested its then-new
Challenger back in 2008 and reported that it could run from 0-60
mph in just 4.9 seconds, on its way to a quarter-mile time of 13.3
seconds. One blip of the throttle and we don't have any reason to
doubt them.
