Vehicle Description
2003 Ford Thunderbird 007 Edition Convertible
There have been dozens of cars associated with James Bond 007. So
many, in fact, that cool cars have become synonymous with the film
private eye franchise. And some of those cars have become iconic as
a result. Think of the Aston Martin DB5, (Goldfinger, and more),
the 1961 Sunbeam Alpine, (Dr. No), and the BMW Z3, (GoldenEye).
Even cars that merely make an appearance in the films without being
driven by James Bond himself, have been listed on fan pages as
critical elements to the film series.
For consignment, a 2003 Ford Thunderbird 007 Edition convertible
with a title verified 18,148 actual miles. Like so many of the
modern Thunderbirds we have represented, the cars are garage kept
and reserved for special occasions and often pampered by their
owners. This one is no exception.
Exterior
They could have called it Halle Berry Coral, but Ford just went
with plain Coral, the color of the special edition to match the
bathing suit she wore in Die Another Day, and when combined with
either the Performance White fiberglass hardtop, or the black
canvas soft top, it's quite the looker. Special edition 17-inch 21
spoke chrome wheels add even more exclusivity to this unique ride
of which only 700 were produced. With modern underpinnings, the
exterior hints at the baby birds of the '50's with more streamlined
features that include the headlights canted rearward, the embedded
hood scoop rather than a rising one, and tail lights that cap the
rear fender lines with smooth red lenses above a rounded rear that
is nearly seamless. Modern iterations of fender vents live in front
while the classic scripted Thunderbird emblem is moved to the rear,
while the elongated bird symbol on the nose still wears the
traditional turquoise highlight. Paint, brightwork, and the tops
themselves are all in excellent condition on this Thunderbird, and
we could not find any exterior imperfections.
Interior
Whisper White is first used on the door panels where, like the
entirety of the car, new features pay homage to the original cars
with bands of black plastic, aluminum inserts, and the white panel,
all of which stay in their lane as they color the dashboard. Robust
white leather bucket seats make use of tuck and roll inserts and
are also in great shape with some slight discoloration on the
driver's side. A sporty steering wheel presents to the driver and
frames the white faced gauges with turquoise needle in a simple
black instrument cove while the machine spun mid panel contains
switchgear and ignition. The clean black center stack houses a
flush AM/FM/6 CD radio, A/C controls, and roof switches. The 007
logo is stamped in the metal panel in front of the passenger over a
white lower dash and glove box. The center console of course houses
the shifter, here with a basic black leather handle over low pile
black carpet while the trunk is finished in charcoal felt covered
panels.
Drivetrain
The 007 package is strictly cosmetic and as such, the powerplant
remains the same 3.9 liter DOHC V8 rated at 280 horsepower and tied
to a 5R55N 5-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear
wheels with 3.58 gears in a conventional axle. Plastic covers
create a neat engine bay that's easy to keep visually clean. Power
disc brakes are supplied on all four wheels.
Undercarriage
Fantastically clean underneath where surface rust is reserved for
bolt heads and there are no errant fluids. The dual exhaust runs
through the original mufflers and exit via chrome tips in a valance
that contours around them. Independent suspension with Macpherson
struts occupy both front and rear.
Drive-Ability
The ultra comfortable cabin and long nose ahead of you provides an
open invitation to cruise this fine roadster, and the longer the
trip, the better! As expected, performance was on par with a
perfectly running, low mileage modern Thunderbird that tracks
straight, handles well, and stops on a dime. Every feather is in
place and every functional item on the car operates as it should.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This car is #537 of the 700 produced. Each vehicle features a
numbered commemorative plaque mounted on the inside of the glove
box and of course, the iconic 007 logo embossed on interior dash
trim. In 1956, Sunset Coral was offered on the Thunderbird and has
since become one of the most sought after colors. We think this
modern version will experience the same destiny in years to come
and there are likely less than 20 of them in your state. Their
design will also be turning heads for decades to come as there's
still nothing quite like it on the road.
