For Sale: 1969 Oldsmobile 442 in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1969 Oldsmobile 442 Holiday 2 Door Hardtop

The word Cutlass is defined as a short curvy one edged sword that was used by sailors. With its clean lines and numerous model offerings including the 2 door hardtop "Holiday," it is clear to see why the A-body from Oldsmobile was the top selling model in the brand's history. The 442 name, pronounced Four four two, derives from the original car's 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed manual transmission, and dual exhaust. Some maintain that the '2' indicated positive traction rear differential. It was originally written 4-4-2.

For consignment, a 1969 Oldsmobile 442 Holiday 2 door hardtop showing 60,459 miles, but the true miles are unknown. It has a numbers matching transmission and a date correct 400ci under the hood and over the years, has been well maintained with components and parts being replaced when needed.

Exterior
Two stage Matador Red covers the car, which is striking on its own, but when you add white hood stripes, the curb appeal shoots way up. With few exceptions, cars today don't advertise their raciness with bold stripes and exterior trimmings, but in the era of this 442, the louder the exterior, the greater potential to be bartering for pink slips down on South Street. Your view of a car like this would likely be the curving trunk lid, flush mounted bumper, fluted exhaust tips, simple vertical tail lights and the meaty 245/60R15 tires. The side markers on the front fender are a simple square lens, but out back the marker takes on the Oldsmobile rocket logo in a tasty little design cue that's easy to miss among this bold presentation. 15-inch Oldsmobile Super Stock II wheels occupy each corner in all their period correct glory and the pillarless cabin above creates an open air experience just this side of a convertible. The paint, metalwork, and well minded gaps are very nice, and we could not find any glaring exterior imperfections other than some cloudiness of the tail light lenses.

Interior
Pleasant Parchment door panels welcome occupants with a stitch patterned insert and clean, straight lines over a black carpeted kick panel contrasting handsomely. The split bench seatis immaculate and are topped with head restraints, while in back, the same vertical stitch pattern translates to a bench with small armrests and the requisite ash trays for backseat smokers or gum chewers. Four spokes form an X on the steering wheel which shares the column with the shifter, leading to a basic gauge package presenting three circles in individual coves of the dashboard. An underscore of simulated burl wood covers the mid dash holding the vent panel under an AM/FM radio and a plastic cupholder, vintage in its own right, rides the transmission hump just under a 3 gauge cluster mounted under the dash. Black loop style carpet is accompanied by vintage Oldsmobile rubber mats and the trunk wears a vinyl mat and houses a full sized spare tire.

Drivetrain
A clean engine is under the hood and it's a date correct 400ci V8 topped by a 4-barrel carburetor mated to the numbers matching rebuilt TH400 3-speed automatic transmission which sends power to the 12 bolt rear with 3.42 gears and Positraction. Power disc brakes are up front with power drums in back. Over the years, gaskets, hoses, water pump, oil pump, alternator, timing cover, intake manifold and power steering pump have been replaced.

Undercarriage
A newer gas tank starts our tour of the underside where dual exhaust runs from headers on the engine to encounter FlowMaster mufflers, then heading out via chrome tips. Suspension includes coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs in back. Overall, conditions are clean underneath with minimal surface rust, clear knuckles, and only residual oil on the pan and flywheel cover. Underneath, new motor mounts, body bushings, sway bar, and rear shocks have been replaced.

Drive-Ability
The hills of Morgantown come alive when we crank the 442 to life and the guttural note is like music to the ears. We put our foot in it enough to track around the loop where the car performs very well, sounds great, and tracks straight, all from a clean and comfortable cabin. We note the radio is not working and the right rear window is out of track. Beyond these things, all functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Contrary to legend, the 4-4-2 was available with either a 4-speed manual or this 3-speed automatic but it didn't warrant GM creating the 4-3-2, plus that doesn't sound nearly as cool. This car will come to you with receipts of work and the original build sheet from the Fremont, California assembly plant where this beauty was put together. This is a fantastically clean and well sorted example in an eye-catching color sure to please onlookers maybe as much as the new owner.
