Vehicle Description
1962 Ford Galaxie 500XL 2 Door Hardtop
"Also midyear, the big Fords would get a performance package, the
Galaxie 500 XL, featuring cool exterior badging, a buckets and
console interior, and an optional engine threshold, beneath which
the XL was not available. Ford's 1962 styling was tame and
conservative, not noted for any great features that collectors
pursue today. The 1963 and 1964 models have proven to be more
popular. But that just makes 1962 that much rarer." HotRod.com,
Sept 2012
For consignment, a 1962 Ford Galaxie 500XL 2 door hardtop with 1222
miles since the completion of a frame off restoration of this Los
Angeles special order G code car with the 406ci tri power automatic
with 405 horsepower and coming to the new owner with the set of
original steel wheels and tires.
Exterior
Understated and elegant, the car is coated with two stage
Corinthian White paint which makes way for bold, black bordered
side trim and C-pillar adornment. The rear fascia increases the
car's aesthetics with a finely ribbed insert between distinctive
round tail lights over a chrome bumper that contours under them. On
the opposite end, the quad headlights become a part of the
horizontal grille in alignment with fender ornaments with spherical
toppers. 15-inch chrome steel wheels wear Ford hubcaps and are
wrapped in staggered size tires with a date code of mid 2022 so as
long as you avoid too many burnouts, you should be good for a few
years. A Thunderbird influenced emblem carries two checkered flags
and the coveted 406 moniker while the 500XL emblem rides the rear
fender. A single crack in the paint near the rocker panel and some
inclusions in the paint are the only flaws we noted.
Interior
The gold and gray door panels would be right at home in any museum
of art, showing how 50's opulence and 60's style combined on a mind
blowing design with vertical stitched inserts with ornamentation,
an undulating silver mid trim piece, followed by a gold carpeted
kick panel with courtesy lights. Artistic style continues on the
front bucket seats in gold vinyl, mirrored by the rear bench and
everything is in very nice condition. A little bit of patina and a
crack in the two tone plastic steering wheel does not deter from
its own style, complete with D-shaped horn ring and sharing the
column with a vintage tachometer in front of the stock dashboard
partly backed with spun aluminum design. In the center, there's an
AM/FM radio above the center console with a ribbed panel that
houses the thumb button shifter in a gold vinyl base. Loop carpet
covers the entire floor in good condition, the headliner is intact
and tight, and the large trunk is covered with period type vinyl
mats and houses a spare.
Drivetrain
Thunderbird embossed gold valve covers indicate 406 and indeed,
under the hood is a date-correct 406ci V8 with three 2-barrel
carburetors and rated at an astounding 405 horsepower. All this is
routed through a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission
sending power to the venerable Ford 9" rear with consignor stated
3.90 Yukon gears and an Eaton TrueTraccarrier. Drum brakes are
supplied front and back.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath where some surface rust exists including a
peppering on the floor pans, but the frame, suspension, and axle
are glossy black. Cast iron headers send dual exhaust the length of
the car before they encounter a pair of Flowmaster mufflers, then
down turned tail pipes. Suspension, possibly beefed up for both the
390 and 406, included coil springs up front and leaf springs in the
rear.
Drive-Ability
If not for the muscular sounds it produces, this Galaxie is an
absolute sleeper, a family car with a proverbial jet engine under
the hood! The stance, tires, and overall configuration of the car
provides a smooth ride with plenty of power underfoot, excellent
visibility through the greenhouse, and great handing with the
fatter than stock modern tires. This well sorted Galaxie also has
all functions operating as they should and we feather this
undercover beast back to the mall. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
If Barney Fife had one of these he might have been Mayberry's
fastest law enforcement officer, even as the need to catch ne'er do
wells was limited. That said, this car will include documentation
of the restoration including receipts, and original equipment. Our
consignor states this may be one of one to come from the factory
with a Tri power and automatic but we were not able to confirm
this. Either way, it's a darn special car and a quintessential show
piece, a pre Muscle Car era muscle car and this Galaxie is out of
this world!
