In comparison to its vastly more expensive predecessor, the SLR McLaren, the SLS AMG is lighter, more comfortable, easier to live with, and far more economical to maintain - all while offering similar or, in some cases, improved performance. The reduction in list price largely stemmed from the switch from the SLR's carbon fiber chassis/body to the SLS' use of aluminum. The SLS was also developed fully in-house by AMG while the SLR was engineered by McLaren, dramatically increasing R&D costs.
