For Sale at Auction: 1968 Ford Mustang in Scarborough, Maine

Vehicle Description

1968 Shelby GT500 Fastback - 4-Speed, Candyapple Red, Factory-Documented
This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 is a stunning and authentic example of one of the most iconic muscle cars of the era, finished in its original Candyapple Red (Ford #2008-A) over black knitted Decor bucket seats. Built at the Metuchen plant and bearing Shelby production number 01851, this fastback left the assembly line on February 7, 1968-21 days later than scheduled-and was originally delivered through the Romy Hammes Corporation of South Bend, Indiana.
Under the hood is the legendary 428 cubic inch Police Interceptor V8, breathing through a four-barrel carburetor and paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a 3.50:1 standard rear axle. This was the same high-performance drivetrain that made the GT500 a standout in the Shelby lineup, blending straight-line muscle with refined road manners and a distinctive Shelby appearance package.
The Shelby rides on aluminum 10-spoke 15? wheels wearing Shelby Cobra center caps and are mounted with Goodyear Polyglass Speedway 350 tires.
Factory-ordered as a Domestic Special Order (#2656) through Ford's Home Office Reserve (DSO 8), this GT500 came exceptionally well equipped from new. Among its original options were power front disc brakes, power steering, tilt-away steering column, visibility group, sport deck rear seat, heavy duty battery, and the extra cooling package-an important addition for performance-minded buyers. The car also retains its functioning AM radio and the Interior Decor Group, which added unique trim and features that set Shelby cars apart from their standard Mustang counterparts.
Production statistics from the 1968 Shelby registry underscore this car's rarity: one of just 813 built in this paint color, one of 458 with this particular paint and trim combination, and one of only 405 ordered with the 428/four-speed drivetrain. Just over 1,000 GT500s were built with a tilt steering column that year, and fewer than 3,000 received the extra cooling package, making this a highly optioned and uniquely configured car.
With its original build details intact and backed by documented production data, this Shelby GT500 represents a significant opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike. It embodies the raw power and style of Carroll Shelby's vision and remains one of the most desirable muscle cars ever built.
Whether shown, driven, or preserved, this 1968 GT500 is a true piece of American performance history-ready to make its next mark.
