Vehicle Description
Founded in 1901 by George Hendee and Oscar Hedstrom, Indian
Motorcycles quickly became a leader in American motorcycle
manufacturing. Known for innovation and durability, Indian models
were among the first motorcycles used for racing and endurance
events, helping to set speed and distance records worldwide. By
pioneering technological advancements, Indian Motorcycles built a
reputation for quality and performance that often surpassed
competitors like Harley-Davidson.The Indian PowerPlus exemplified
this spirit of American ingenuity, with a 61-cubic-inch, 1000cc
engine producing 16 horsepower. Produced from 1916 to 1924 by
Hendee Manufacturing Co. and designed by Charles Gustafson, the
PowerPlus introduced groundbreaking side-valve technology, a major
shift from Indian's earlier F-head engines. Gustafson, who had
designed the first U.S.-built side-valve motorcycle for
Reading-Standard in 1907, applied his expertise to create an engine
with cooler-running valves, simplified construction, and easier
maintenance-qualities that made the PowerPlus a revolutionary
machine. The PowerPlus earned a reputation for durability when
Cannonball Baker set records on a prototype in 1915 during the
Three Flags endurance run, covering the 1,650-mile route from
Vancouver to Tijuana in just 3 days, 9 hours, and 15 minutes. This
incredible achievement underscored the PowerPlus's capabilities and
cemented its status as one of the era's most robust
motorcycles.Presented with a remarkable array of period-correct
options, this Indian PowerPlus features a rare, factory-installed
electric starter, a Corbin speedometer, electric lights, horn, and
an ammeter. A meticulous nine-year restoration, expertly completed
by renowned motorcycle restorer Wilson B. Plank, returned the bike
and sidecar to their original brilliance. Finished in a rich
Oriental Red with Gold pinstriping, the bike still presents
beautifully, however there are a few areas in the paint that
reflect the age of the restoration. The brightwork presents very
well; footboards, handlebars, taillights, wheels, headers,
mufflers, fasteners, pedals, and gas/oil lines were refinished as
part of the restoration. Comprehensive documentation accompanies
the bike, including an array of photos and detailed diagrams that
showcase the restoration's exceptional quality and preserve this
remarkable motorcycle's history. This remarkable PowerPlus has
garnered awards at prestigious events, including top honors at the
2003 Annual Indian Motorcycle Show and the 2004 Portsmouth Abbey
Show. This 1920 Indian PowerPlus, a testament to pioneering
engineering and dedicated restoration, stands as an iconic piece of
motorcycling history-ready for display and further accolades in any
distinguished collection. Please note sold on a Bill of Sale Offers
