Vehicle Description
1991 Audi 200 Quattro 20V Sedan
"Well hit me a with a two by four. I was convinced that Audi had
lost sight of what made it the darling of us car crazies in the
early 1980's, and then the 200 Quattro rolled into our lot. It
drives lithe and lean and direct. It feels agile enough to dance
the Charleston. It can tear around in traffic like a fullback
exploding down field, and keep it up all day. If Audi can send us
more cars like this, it may yet survive the damage done to it by
the bad guys at 60 Minutes." Car and Driver 1991
For consignment, a 1991 Audi 200 Quattro 20V sedan with a title
verified 191,740 actual miles, a former Washington state car that's
been garage kept and recently had timing belt service and power
steering lines replaced. The car will come to you with service
records dating back to 2003.
Exterior
"Though nearly a decade old, its trendsetting sheet metal still
outshines most of its imitators," wrote Car and Driver and as
things became increasingly rounded in years to come. The 200 now
stands as a solid remnant of big boxy touring sedans of the 90's,
here wearing a coat of Pearlescent White paint. The clasped rings
emblem rides over a rear light bar that spans the width of the
angular back behind a wide rear window unimpeded by curving
pillars. And in fact, the C-pillars are narrow butted up against a
fixed quarter window that allows for a vast greenhouse surrounding
the cabin. Up front, European headlights have been added and the
right angles persist with an arrow straight from the bumper and
vertical grille with horizontal strakes fronting a long, flat hood.
15-inch cast aluminum lace style wheels wear Vredestein 205/60R15
tires with a mid 2024 date code. Chipping paints, chin scuffs,
various scratches, a ding, and some wheels discoloration register
as imperfections on this otherwise clean and straight exterior.
Interior
We're not foresters, but that could very well be striped maple
applique as trim on the instantly stunning interior. Beginning on
the door panel that combines gray leather with the syrup colored
wood, and they're all in fine shape and robust, with just a crack
in the driver's speaker cover as a distraction. The leather buckets
up front are pure European sport with the open headrests and built
in lumbar and side support. The driver's seat shows patina with
wrinkles and some separation and all other seats show some to far
lesser amount. Rear occupants are afforded storage pockets, a vent,
a lighter, and those same sporty headrests. We almost don't notice
the basic black steering wheel as that wood and gray combination on
the dash grabs your attention long enough for a relaxing sigh as
you settle into your leather throne. A wide instrument cluster
awaits ahead with a row of gauges and a panel of idiot lights which
are black when not illuminated. The lovely wood trim spans the
width of the dashboard, taking in vents along the way while the
center stack holds various switchgear as well as an AM/FM/Cassette
radio and digital A/C control panel. A wood shifter is offered
dressed in a leather boot with a differential switch that could be
out of an 80's arcade game, but is not, and an armrest that makes
room for an engaged parking brake handle. Velvety low pile carpet
is below, a sunroof above, and the trunk is fully finished in
gray.
Drivetrain
A clean driver quality 2.2 liter turbocharged and intercooled
inline 5-cylinder resides under the hood. It is fuel injected and
rated at 217 horsepower. It's mated to a 5-speed manual
transmission splitting power on demand to 3.889 gears at each end.
Power disc brakes are provided on this high end sport luxury
cruiser.
Undercarriage
There's some surface rust, so road dirt, general metal patina, and
a good amount of oil under the engine, some drifting to the right
catalytic converter. Beyond that, it's mostly belly pan underneath
with the dual exhaust traveling down the center to meet tubular
glasspack style mufflers, then into a single resonator, and finally
out back via one angle cut tail pipe through the valance.
Suspension is independent front and rear with MacPherson struts in
front and multi link in back.
Drive-Ability
You can love the wood all you want, but you'll want to watch the
road, reserving admiration for red lights and full stops only. The
engine is a quick starter and delivers good power. Car and Driver
achieved 0 to 60 in 6.8 seconds, quick for the time, and 3/10ths
short of Audi's claim at the time. Straight tracking and handling
are very good and the width and wheelbase help maintain an upright
posture around turns. Only the left rear power window does not work
on this well maintained car and we note the headlight warning shows
due to the European headlight swap. All other functions check the
box of workability. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Famed auto journalist Csaba Csere wrote, "the 200 Quattro embodies
the triple distilled essence of Audi, and it may be several years,
if ever, before such efficient technology is assembled in the new,
(forthcoming), body". Audi, and technology in general, has come a
long way since 1991, but this flagship tourer is now an uncommon
classic that rarely comes up for sale, and when they do, they're
often not in this good of condition. Call with your interest
