Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL.
This W113 Pagoda has documented history to new with only four
owners, and presents to an exceptionally nice standard inside and
out. Finished in Arabian Grey over black interior, it's an
attractive color that's not often seen on a Pagoda. Paint and body
are excellent with no known rust; the underside underwent dry ice
cleaning last year and is highly detailed. One repaint in the
original color in 2001 has held up well; all body panels are
believed original (hood, hard top and soft top clamshell numbers
all match the data plate) and the factory spot welds are present on
the inner fender edges beneath the hood.
Much of the interior is believed to be original, including the
steering wheel, door panels, hard top headliner, and upper and
lower dash pads. The interior wood trim was refinished in 2012. The
clock was rebuilt by Palo Alto Speedometer in 2018, but the rest of
the gauges are in excellent original (and working) condition. The
canvas soft top was replaced in 2018 and new square-weave carpets
were installed in 2020. The Becker Europa stereo works, as do all
climate sliders and instrument lights.
A four-page written history accompanies the sale, supported by the
original purchase invoice, copies of the original 1966 title (and
titles from every subsequent owner) and decades of service records.
Factory data card confirms correct colors and original
numbers-matching engine.
This 230SL was first sold by Tysinger, the Mercedes dealer in
Hampton, Virginia - it remained in Hampton for the next 30 years
until the original owner's death in 1996. The first owner's nephew,
based in nearby Yorktown, inherited this car and kept it for
another 18 years until he retired and moved to Florida. The owner
of a shop in Yorktown (who regularly serviced this car had long
admired it) acquired the car for his personal collection in 2014,
where it remained until the Asheville, NC-based present owner's
purchase in 2017.
Based on records and an interview with the original owner's nephew,
we believe the indicated mileage, at 47,000, is original and that
the odometer has not rolled over. Although this car was driven
sparingly, it was always garage kept and maintained in proper
driving condition.
Under present ownership the car has been seen more regular use -
just over 6,000 miles in eight years - and was subject to a
thorough maintenance program that addressed the following: complete
tune up (including rebuilt distributor), valve adjustment; new fuel
injectors, fuel filters and fuel pump; new clutch, resurfaced
flywheel, transmission rebuild, and shift linkage bushings; new
Michelin tires, new Bilstein shocks, rear trailing arm bushings and
pinion seal / differential mount replaced; re-cored radiator (water
pump was replaced under prior ownership). Additionally, the engine
compartment has been fully detailed, including having the fuel
injection system re-plated in yellow zinc. All hose clamps were
replaced with correct, original style clamps.
Rarely have we seen a W113 in such original and unmolested
condition, subject only to regular maintenance and very light
restoration work over the years. It feels tight and more "put
together" than any we've driven, thanks largely to the low original
mileage (and the fact that it has never been fully disassembled and
put back together). Spare, jack, tool roll, reproduction owner's
manual, data card, two sets of keys, and extensive records
accompany the sale.
