Internally dubbed SCM (Super Car Millennium), the development of
the Carrera GT prototype was shrouded in secrecy with just a small
team of designers and engineers responsible for the project.
Expected to be a "one off" design and prototyping exercise, they
chose an exotic 5.5-liter V10 from an aborted racing project to
power the concept car. So fantastic was the reaction to this
prototype driven along the Champs-�lysees to the 2000 Paris Motor
Show that the approval of a production version became a foregone
conclusion. To no one's surprise, the Carrera GT became the
standout supercar of the 2000s, employing a more analog engineering
approach that benefited from over a decade's worth of engine
development.
Featuring a normally aspirated 5.7-liter V10, the Carrera GT
powerplant first began as an engineering exercise to stay current
with Formula One's new engine rules after their all-new (Typ 3512)
3.5-liter normally aspirated V12 failed to impress in 1991. Later,
this engine was selected for use in Porsche's LMP2000 sports racing
prototype program (Typ 9R3), and enlarged to 5.5-liters to race at
the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Surprisingly, the promising LMP2000 racing
program for this engine was ultimately abandoned, but this special
V10 engine, underutilized for so long, would soon find the ultimate
application in the Carrera GT.
As Porsche's halo supercar of the decade, the Carrera GT's options
list was minimal. In fact, the U.K. Price List stated that, "In
order to minimise the vehicle's weight for possible competition
use, the Carrera GT is delivered as standard without air
conditioning and without an audio system. However, these items,
together with all other personalisation features, are available as
no-cost options." This example features both the XT (15 mm extra
width) driver and passenger side carbon fiber bucket seats and the
Becker Porsche Online Pro CD Radio with BOSE and air conditioning
options added back during the ordering process, along with option
code GBT indicating a thicker steering wheel.
Built in December 2004, this U.S.-market Carrera GT, limitation
number 0541, was sold by Braman Porsche West Palm Beach, Florida
accumulating 625 miles while under original ownership. In fact, the
original owner's periodic use and regular servicing noted on the
clean CARFAX account for the majority of the supercar's 792 miles,
a sure sign of the car's immediate collectability. Records indicate
this Porsche remained with the first owner until 2009 before
passing to a short succession of owners before arriving at Porsche
Beachwood with 712 miles for a clutch measurement recorded at over
30 mm, a fresh battery, oil change, and brake fluid flush.
In October 2014, with just 726 miles, technicians at Porsche of
Westwood performed an inspection noting the car's condition as
"brand new." The car remained in Porsche of Westwood's care for a
number of years and in July 2017, with 730 miles, the dealership
was entrusted to perform a $25,000 engine-out Major Service that
also included a water pump replacement, new TPMS sensors, and two
new power steering lines. The dealership was once again called on
to inspect the car at 740 miles that August when ownership
transferred to a new owner.
Most recently, Porsche Chandler has tended to the car. In June
2024, Carrera GT number 0541 received four fresh N-Spec Michelin
Pilot Super Sport tires, four replacement TPMS sensors, new front
hood struts, and a replacement battery. Battery replacement is not
a trivial service item for a Carrera GT. In keeping with the design
of a supercar, it is placed low, in front of the right rear wheel
in a location difficult to access by anyone without specialized
technical knowledge and technical equipment.
Offered with a highly collectible specification and well-preserved
condition, this GT Silver Metallic Carrera GT includes several
often-missing delivery items, not least of which is its set of
factory luggage. The five-piece Italian-made luggage set comprises
a weekender travel bag, a beechwood-handled briefcase, a hanging
suit bag, a shoulder bag, and a center console bag, all trimmed in
the same Dark Grey leather as the Carrera GT's interior.
Additionally, it is furnished with its factory-supplied fitted car
cover, books, tools, centerlock socket, and more. A service history
file dating from 2007 to 2024 also accompanies the sale and is on
file and available for review by interested parties.
Offered with an impressively low 792 miles at the time of
cataloging, this collectible Carrera GT is an exquisite example of
race-honed engineering brought to life on the road. The motorsport
pedigreed 605 horsepower, 5.7-liter V10 is a finely honed
instrument that requires not only a confident right foot, but the
ability to properly maintain its rev-happy nature to stay in top
