1989 Porsche 911 Speedster in Costa Mesa, California
In 1989, Porsche expanded its convertible lineup with the
introduction of the Speedster. Powered by the proven 3.2-liter
powerplant, this one-year-only model arrived just before the
introduction of the Type 964 body style, making it the final
iteration of the iconic G-body design. Chief stylist Tony Lapine's
interpretation incorporated distinct visual elements from the 356
Speedster of the 1950s, most notably the lowered, steeply raked
windshield that gave the original Speedster such a sporting look.
The optional "Turbo Look" package, introduced in 1984, proved
particularly popular with Speedster buyers, adding flared wheel
arches and an enlarged rear wing. Production of the Speedster was
limited to 1989, with a total of 2,065 units manufactured, securing
its position as one of the most collectible 911 variants.
One of just approximately 825 examples made for the U.S. market,
this Speedster is attractively finished in Grand Prix White with a
dark blue convertible top and trimmed with a Marine Blue partial
leather interior, further complemented by 16-inch Fuchs wheels
featuring Grand Prix White centers. It was appointed at
Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen with optional electrically-height-adjustable
sports seats left and right, air conditioning, a shorter gear shift
lever, alarm system, a Blaupunkt Charleston SQR 26 radio, a luggage
compartment in place of the rear seats, and Goodyear tires. The
accompanying clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report places the
Speedster in California in the early 1990s, accumulating 38,811
miles by August 1993. Subsequent entries show that the Porsche
spent time in Florida and later returned to California for service
at Porsche Woodland Hills before being relocated to Nevada in 2018.
Service invoices and work logs indicate that the Speedster has been
consistently cared for in recent years, including new front and
rear brake discs and pads (July 2024), replacing the fuel tank
(August 2024), a full dry ice cleaning of the undercarriage
(January 2025), and refinishing the wheels (February 2025).
This Speedster is now offered with 45,087 miles and includes its
Porsche-issued Certificate of Authenticity confirming that it
retains its original, matching-numbers 3.2-liter air-cooled flat
six and G50 five-speed manual transmission. With Porsche continuing
to pay homage to the Speedster with the 991 generation, it is clear
that the Porsche Speedster is an evergreen, perennial classic that
will continue to attract collectors' attention due to both its good
looks and limited production numbers. This well-appointed, original
example represents a fantastic opportunity to own one of the most
desirable G-body Porsche models ever built.
