THE CARPORT AT GRACELAND. A rare and iconic piece of Elvis Presley
history, this 1976 Chevrolet Silverado 3+3 Crew Cab Pickup Truck is
a testament to the King of Rock 'n' Roll's larger-than-life legacy.
Featuring a powerful 454 cubic inch engine, this third-generation
C/K series truck was purchased by Elvis on October 9, 1975, at John
Ellis Chevrolet in Memphis for $7,113.31 (after a discount). The
invoice lists the purchase as being made by Elvis Presley of 3674
Elvis Presley Blvd., Memphis, TN, tying it directly to Graceland.
The Silverado, part of General Motors' Rounded Line series
(1973-1991), introduced the four-door cab configuration, offering
both style and practicality, perfect for use on the sprawling
Graceland property. The vehicle remains untouched, in running
condition, just as it was during its time at Graceland. In 1976,
Elvis gifted the truck to Warren Horton, a Shelby County Sheriff's
deputy, in a heartwarming gesture typical of Elvis' generosity.
According to Horton, the gift happened after he admired the truck
while at a shooting range. The next day, Elvis' crew delivered it
to him, confirming Elvis' wish to pass it on. Horton recounted the
moment he discovered Elvis' name on the title, an extraordinary
detail that left both him and his wife in disbelief. According to
Horton's account which is documented online, "Horton says he was at
the shooting range when Elvis' crew drove up in the pickup truck.
Horton admired the truck, and someone in Elvis' crew suggested he
take the truck for a ride. The next day, Horton says one of Elvis'
buddies came back to the gun range with the truck and said, 'It's
yours. Elvis just called. He went out to Vegas the night before and
said you like that truck and he wants you to have it.' Horton says
he couldn't believe it and neither could his wife. 'The whole time
I'm saying where did that truck come from?' said Judy Horton. But
when Warren Horton told her, he says she responded sarcastically,
'Oh, Elvis gave you a truck.' The proof was in the paperwork.
Horton says he reached into the glove box and pulled out the title.
He says Elvis' name was right there at the top. Judy Horton says
her husband gave her that information as they were pulling into
their church parking lot. She says when she went inside, 'everybody
was beginning to have their Wednesday night meal and I'm screaming
Elvis gave us a truck!' Warren and Judy Horton kept the truck for a
few years, but say they had to trade it in. Warren Horton says he
wonders what the truck would be worth today, if he could have
afforded to put the pickup in storage to preserve it." Included
