1962 Volvo PV544 For SaleThis 1962 Volvo PV544 is a well-preserved
example of Volvo's rally-era icon, enhanced with carefully chosen
performance upgrades. Finished in excellent condition throughout,
it is powered by a stroked version of the B18 1.8L four-cylinder,
now displacing 2,300cc. The engine features custom Weisco pistons,
Carrillo rods, and twin SU carburetors - built to be exceptionally
durable by Duane Matejka of R-Sport Engineering, one of the
foremost Volvo performance engine specialists. Matejka is known for
preparing engines for the grueling Peking to Paris Rally, as well
as for rebuilding the legendary Irv Gordon's 3.2-million-mile Volvo
motor, now displayed in the Volvo museum.
Power is delivered through a Borg Warner T35 automatic
transmission, while the chassis benefits from modern upgrades
including a tubular suspension with coilovers and an upgraded disc
brake system. These subtle improvements greatly enhance handling
and braking performance while preserving the PV544's vintage
driving character.
1962 also marked Volvo's transition to a 12-volt electrical system,
adding further reliability and usability. During its era, the PV544
earned a reputation for toughness through international rallying,
with notable success in the European Rally Championship and East
African Safari Rally - achievements that cemented its motorsport
legacy.
This example has been under the care of the same family for the
past 15 years and reflects consistent maintenance and preservation.
It represents a rare opportunity to acquire a classic Volvo that
blends period-correct charm with rally-bred engineering and
thoughtful upgrades for modern usability.
