Vehicle Description
2018 BMW M4 Competition Convertible
"Don't envy the folks working in BMW's M division. More so than any
other keystone performance brand, they're burdened with the
Sisyphean task of creating user friendly performance sedans/coupes,
(and sometimes SUVs), that their customers expect to serve as the
standard bearers in hotly contested segments. The 2018 BMW M4 is
more than capable as a sports coupe, and proved itself to be an
impressive candidate for a daily driver. Also, for those obsessed
with three pedals, it remains the only member of the segment to
still offer a manual transmission." Motor Trend, October 2018
For consignment, a 2018 BMW M4 Competition convertible with a title
verified 63,912 actual miles and a 444 horsepower twin turbo 3.0
liter under the hood. The Competition package also adds adaptive
suspension with upgraded springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars. This
garage kept beauty is a two owner example.
Exterior
Motor Trend called the looks "smoldering" as it's aggressive
without being over the top or "boy racer" visually loud. Mineral
Gray Metallic looks especially handsome when mixed with the dark
trim, including the emblems which present in sinister black. Small
sparks of color accents are found in the BMW logo and the coveted
tri-striped M logo that appears on the grille, the side vent trim,
and of course the decklid, which competes for attention with the
inboard quad tailpipes under the bumper cover. They are black too,
and this is not only the view the competition will see, but the
stuff of boyhood dreams, quad pipes, wide hips, fat tires. The
20-inch wheels carry staggered size Michelin tires and with a late
2021 date code, you still have time to practice maintaining
traction on launches. The rounded roof with defined panels is the
only indication this is a convertible and with the top down, the
straight shoulder line is interrupted by a steeply raked windshield
and the subtle power bulge that adds M character to the nose.
Imperfections include numerous small scratches, chin scuffs, and
notable chip in the one tail light, and a front air dam that has
seen one too many high driveway ramps.
Interior
Red seems entirely appropriate for a car of this performance
stature and it begins as inserts in the sporty door panels that
include red stitched leather, piano black trim, and smooth panels
that just exude quality. The red leather bucket seats are dramatic
with a heavily bolstered and stitch patterned with electronic
adjustments and a vent just below the robust head restraint. Some
minor wear on the driver's side as expected, but all others,
including the 2+2 in back, are in excellent condition. The fat
steering wheel is ergonomically contoured and leads to a clear
instrument cluster with the most pertinent information and
accompanying electronic display on a black panel below. Piano black
and carbon fiber trim surround the wide center cluster that
includes the AM/FM radio which displays on the screen up top and is
Bluetooth, Navigation, and XM equipped. Also spread wide are the
buttons and knobs for the A/C, unambiguous so as not to distract
the pilot. Both carbon fiber and red stitched leather dress the
center console which houses the shifter, all in good shape, and it
rises above low pile black carpet below and under the hinged
hardtops charcoal headliner above. Even with the top down, the
trunk provides limited but more storage than you might expect.
Drivetrain
Under the hood a 3.0 liter DOHC twin turbo inline six cylinder tied
to a 6-speed manual transmission and rated at 444 horsepower. The
bay has some carbon fiber trim and a prominent intercooler perched
on top. Meanwhile, power is sent to the active rear differential
with 3.46 gears and the adaptive suspension is fully independent
with Macpherson struts in front and multi-link with coil springs in
back. Obviously, power disc brakes with blue calipers occupy each
wheel.
Undercarriage
Aerodynamic pans cover most of the underside where dual exhaust
travels down a heat shield lined center tunnel, branch off after
the cat, then branch again to enter the original muffler that gives
way to the four exhaust tips. Other than typical road dust, the
underside is clean and oil free, the knuckles are clean and no
surface rust is found.
Drive-Ability
Sure, F-15 seats in a jet and F1 seats in a race car are likely
more focused on fit rather than comfort, but with these seats you
get both. They absolutely envelop you and give you the confidence
of G-force rated launches and turns, before you even start the
engine. And once you do, the exhaust emits a muscular but not
blaring tone, and the car rolls easily onto the test loop where its
capabilities are instantly obvious and whether it's acceleration,
turn ins, or toss ability, this is a thoroughbred that exemplifies
BMW's old adage of "the ultimate driving machine". We do note a
whirring noise at first, in first gear, which goes away in second.
All other functions on the car work as they should. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
Motor Trend experienced a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds in their
original 2018 feature. Over time, cars may either gain a few tenths
or even lose a few tenths. We don't test performance stats, but
seat of the pants feel during a mild and short drive tells us all
we need to know. This is one bad BMW, and by bad, we mean as in the
Michael Jackson song. This is a serious performer, a great spec and
a pampered history. Drive it to work or save it for Cars and
Coffee. Heck, use it for both! Whatever you decide, you'll likely
be smiling from zero to whatever the posted speed is!
