It's rare when people who deal with classic cars all day, every day
stop in their tracks and say, "Wow, I haven't seen one of those
before." But, this numbers-matching 1987 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28
Convertible with a mere 9,643 (yes, you read that right) miles on
its odometer did just that. This is the first year of the third-gen
Camaro factory convertible, and the first drop-top variant of
Chevy's Pony Car since 1969. Coinciding with the Camaro's 20th
anniversary, these unique rides were outsourced by GM and converted
(no pun intended) by the American Sunroof Company (ASC), and all
were considered commemorative editions.
Inside, we find a black cloth-trimmed interior that looks
incredible for its age. The throw-back three-spoke steering wheel
sits just forward of the five-pod analog gauge cluster that
features an 85 mph speedometer and 7,000 RPM tach. Reminding you of
how easy driving used to be, the slider and knob HVAC controls and
AM/FM/cassette stereo system keep things simple. But, power windows
and locks, along with air conditioning and cruise control, offer up
plenty of modern amenities for a car in the late 1980s. A
well-placed 20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition sits on the
glove box door panel to remind you that this is no ordinary Z/28.
However, the open air rushing through your hair will deliver the
same message if you don't feel much like reading.
Under that expansive louvered hood, we find a numbers-matching 305
cubic-inch V-8 engine. Stock heads topped with a four-barrel
Rochester Quadrajet carburetor send power to the rear wheels via a
700R4 four-speed automatic transmission. A factory dual to single
to dual exhaust keeps this car sounding as authentic as the day it
rolled off the assembly line. Fifteen-inch five-spoke wheels
wrapped in Goodyear rubber hide a set of power-assisted discs up
front with drums in back.

There were just 1,007 total units made for this Pony Car's drop-top
re-debut. Still, this Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 Convertible represents
one of just 744 cars produced with the Z/28 option package, making
it one of the rarer vehicles out there. Add to that scarcity the
fact that this car has less than ten thousand miles on its odometer
and comes to us with a numbers-matching five-liter V-8, and there
will be plenty more people stopping in their tracks to ogle this
unique machine. If you want a car you are sure not to see almost
anywhere else, don't wait another second. Call today!
