Vehicle Description
1996 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Coupe
"Ford has successfully opted for refinement in all of the Cobra's
behaviors. As a result, it's the best daily driver muscle car in
the test. Its DOHC 32 valve V8 is the smallest but highest tech of
the engines here. It convincingly makes as much horsepower but less
torque than the 5.7 liter powerhouses, and the car turned in darn
near the same performance, thanks to its lighter weight." Car and
Driver, December 1995 comparing the car to the Z28 SS and Firebird
Formula WS6.
For consignment, a 1996 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra coupe with a title
verified 142,492 actual miles. Readers might be surprised to learn
that although more than 10,000 Cobras were built in 1996, this is
actually one of a limited 2,000. That's because it's one of the
Mystic Clearcoat Metallic cars, but due to costs, the owner opted
to go with black when the original clear coat failed and could not
be saved.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
And black it is, here repainted in two stage configuration and
complemented by tinted windows and 17-inch black FR500 wheels for
an extra sinister presentation. Fog lights are contoured into the
fascia and dual intake scoops that are reminiscent of a horse's
gaping nostrils are perched on the hood. Quarter panel intakes
combine with a rear wing and big dual exhaust in presenting more go
fast capabilities and the iconic Cobra emblem, the coiled snake
with the flared hood, is positioned on each fender and even from a
distance, car people know what that means. Imperfections on this
well loved car include chin scrapes, chipped paint, inclusions in
the finish, various scratches, and some rough paint behind a rear
wheel.
Interior
Black door panels are a model of simplicity and smooth form with
functionality and no unnecessary extras. Black leather seats occupy
the interior with plenty of patina in the forms of creases and some
stretched leather, particularly in the rear. There's compression
and wear on the driver's seat but no apparent tears. The leather
wrapped steering wheel fronts the SVT dash with its white faced
gauges which are accompanied by an A-pillar pod housing an air/fuel
gauge and oil pressure gauge. The center stack is also simple, with
a three dial climate panel and Pioneer AM/FM/CD radio with AUX and
USB. The shifter lives in the center console with a slightly
weathered leather boot, all over low pile black carpet and a
charcoal headliner that is sagging.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a clean, driver quality 4.6 liter DOHC 32 valve V8,
fuel injected with an added cold air intake and IMRC delete,
(intake manifold runner control,) for better high end torque. The
transmission is a Hanlon Motorsport T45 5-speed manual with new Ram
clutch, sending power to the Ford 8.8" axle in back with 3.55 gears
and TracLoc. Drilled and slotted rotors enhance the power disc
brakes on all four corners.
Undercarriage
Typical surface for a car with this mileage is observed, but no oil
leaks are seen. The dual exhaust leaves from headers, finds an X
union, then enter stainless Pypes mufflers before exiting via
chrome tips. There are no catalytic converters on board. Suspension
is enhanced here with full UPR suspension, lowered on Eibach
Sportline springs and wearing subframe connectors.
Drive-Ability
This old snake still puts out and provides a comfortable cabin, now
lower to the ground, from which to pilot it. The acceleration is
gratifying, and the handling is very good, a level or two up from
your stock configured Cobra. And the brakes work as good as they
look! We note the A/C, horn, and fog lights do not work, but all
other functions on board operate as they should. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
The car comes to you with documentation from SVT verifying that
this is car #1559 of 2000 originally delivered in Mystic in 1996,
and a certificate displays that this is car #5874 of 7,496 Cobra
coupes delivered that year. Whether you return this car to Mystic,
or simply enjoy it as is, is completely up to you. Either way
you'll have one of the legendary pony cars of the mid 90's with
plenty of galloping fun trails ahead!
