For Sale: 1964 Dodge Dart in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1964 Dodge Dart 270 2 Door Hardtop

The third generation Dodge Dart was a big success, especially after the radical design of the one year second generation that was a bit too radical to sustain. The lines and body panels were simplified, and the new car set in motion a success run that would outsell the comparable Ford Falcon and Chevrolet Nova as the model came to an end in 1976. The Dart returned as a compact car from 2013 to 2016 but it's unlikely that generation will ever be considered classic.

For consignment, a 1964 Dodge Dart 270 2 door hardtop showing 80,362 but the true miles are unknown. Designed as a compact grocery getter one can see the beginnings of the muscle car era starting to form in the body lines and faux hood scoop. This one has Mopar Rally wheels added to it which just enhances its muscle car aspirations, and some additional performance add ons that fulfill an owners desire to make it a reliable and drivable car.

Exterior
Drenched in the correct Medium Blue this car is clean and straight and quintessentially 60's with long, lean panels and a razor straight shoulder line. Good gaps abound on this car, and it wears good condition brightwork, badging and chrome. Large round bezels at the front of each fender hold a headlight at either side and at the rear of the car tiny fins, a tribute to days of yore, hover above a similar design with simple circular brake lights. A grille described as "electric razor" form greets you from the front DODGE lettering are spaced to allow air to continue to flow to the radiator. The trunk lid not only holds the reverse lights but also a fratzog, the triple arrow logo, with 270 in the center, a call out to the trim line of this car. 14-inch Mopar Rally wheels are on all corners and are wrapped in 195/70R14s. Imperfections include some patina of the windshield frame and emblems, and one small ding in the body.

Interior
Looking much like it came from the factory with a simple blue padded dashboard, original steering wheel, amazing condition blue vinyl split bench seat, matching rear seat and amazing condition door panels. The simplistic dash looks like something from Lost in Space and contains gauges to monitor engine functions, a basic AM radio, standard heater controls and the original push button transmission selector. Blue twist pile carpet floods the floors, and a light blue headliner is up above, the carpet has protective blue vinyl mats the headliner does have some staining but remains high and tight. The surprisingly large trunk is covered with a period vinyl mat which shows definite usage.

Drivetrain
Much stronger than when it left the factory, a 225ci slant 6 now replaces the 6 cylinder the car was born with. A mid 1970's casting cylinder head was bolted on, not only for the benefits of hardened exhaust seats to be compatible with unleaded fuel, but also to get rid of the pesky spark plug tubes that were leak prone on earlier engines. A mild Mopar Performance camshaft was added, not only to improve power but to improve precious mpg's. This works in conjunction with a circa 1977-1980 Super Six intake manifold and allows the installation of a 2bbl carburetor. This carb is from a mid 80's 318 and has been modified to work without the computer controlled enrichment solenoid. The 904 3-speed Torqueflite transmission has been rebuilt with V8 front and rear clutch drums for strength and durability. A 3.23 geared rear axle puts power to the road and compliments the rest of the drivetrain nicely. A dual circuit master cylinder was added for safety along with front disc brakes courtesy of Scarebird while the rears remain drums. An adjustable proportioning valve has also been added and is well hidden but easily accessible on the left trunk hinge bracket.

Undercarriage
A pair of torsion bars in the front courtesy of a 340ci V8 powered Dart plus an added front sway bar along with factory rear leaf springs provide a smooth, comfortable and sure footed ride. Single exhaust in like new condition snakes its way back through a stock style muffler and keeps things nice and quiet. There's some typical surface rust on uncoated components, some residual oil on the pan, and some grease build up on the knuckles and in other spots, but otherwise the underside is free of invasive rust.

Drive-Ability
A pump of the gas and twist of the key and we're on a trip to 1964. The Dart provided straight tracking, adequate acceleration, decent handling made softer by the 70-series tires, and very good braking. The short rear windows and sizable C-pillar combined with no passenger side mirror means people in the 60's had to be extra skilled when changing lanes and you'll have to adjust your brain when you go from your modern car with blind spot warning lights to an analog relic of the 60's, glorious in its originality. All functions worked as designed and it was time to aim this Dart for the bullseye, errrr uhhh, garage. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

A restored, but mostly original Dart that is built to be driven. Some performance, handling, drivability, and safety upgrades make this car ready to go to any show, cruise or vacation. It's the perfect size and represents everything great about '60's simplicity and Detroit iron. It's likely the buyer of this car had one in his or her past, but that's by no means a prerequisite!
