For Sale: 1974 Chevrolet Camaro in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1974 Chevrolet Camaro Type LT Z28

"More L, more T than ever. We call this Camaro the Type LT because it takes the twin concepts of Luxury and Touring up another flight of steps beyond the Sport Coupe. Which in itself is quite a generous helping of comfort and driveability." From the 1974 Camaro brochure. Just 13,802 Z28's were produced in 1974 and only 3,898 of them were ordered with the Type LT option.

For consignment, a 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Type LT Z28 showing 11,657 miles but the true miles are unknown. This true Z28 LT started life with a body shipped from California, then restored by a mechanical engineer with a couple of friends with names like Edelbrock, Hedman, Tremec, and Hotchkiss, built to be driven with a few custom touches for good measure.

Exterior
A burgundy like Medium Red Metallic covers this F-body with two stage luster unobstructed by the stripe package that was available in '74 but still wearing the rear spoiler that differentiates the Z from other Camaro models. No matter where an onlooker stands, they'll recognize the Z28 by the emblem which appears on each of the four sides including on the grille and on the back of the spoiler while a Type LT emblem is affixed to the C pillar. That black eggcrate grille blends well with the inset black bezels of the headlights. A body colored front spoiler is hiding underneath, sport mirrors flank the cabin between a solid roof, and 15-inch Chevrolet SS wheels carry 225/60R15's. Imperfections include some missing paint on the bumper, a ding in the rubber part of the bumper, inclusions in the finish, and some minor scratches on the wheels.

Interior
Here's where the "L" comes to life beginning on the door panels which combine clean saddle vinyl with a ribbed cloth insert, identical to the brochure model, rimmed in a black band of trim. The front bucket seats and rear 2+2 are constructed in the same way and all look clean in this handsome interior and the brochure describes them as "deeper, more restful". An aftermarket cover protects the rope spun design of the steering wheel which continues on the center spokes, and the instrument cluster is embedded in black plastic textured like leather, housing a speedometer and tachometer prominently in the center. Additional aftermarket gauges are installed in the dash, canted toward the driver, and a touchscreen AM/FM radio includes USB, Bluetooth, and phone connectivity. The stitched center console is home to the Hurst shifter and nylon cut pile carpet is an upgrade from the 1973's twist pile and is protected by GM branded rubber mats. A smooth camel headliner shows only minor waves while the mat in the trunk shows usage and shares the space with a full size spare.

Drivetrain
Finned valve cover and some chrome components dress up the clean engine bay where we find the rebuilt 350ci V8 with high compression heads, a Demon 3-barrel carburetor over an Edelbrock Air Gap intake manifold. Hedman long tube headers are on board and the whole power plant is mated to a Tremec 5 speed manual transmission with a Ram hydraulic clutch sending power to the 3.73 geared 10 bolt axle. Power brakes temper the forward momentum with disc in front and drums in the back.

Undercarriage
Clean underneath with a nicely painted rear differential cover, minimal surface rust, and no signs of fluid leaks. The dual exhaust comes from the headers and meets a pair of Thrush mufflers before exiting discreetly in the back. Suspension here is made up of Hotchkiss lowering springs in the front and leaf springs in the back with Caltrac bars, along with sway bars front and rear.

Drive-Ability
We enter the clean cabin and find ourselves surrounded by the familiar F-body configuration, with a bit of distinction thanks to some LT features. The 350 comes to life and we're on our way, around the test loop where the car runs well, sounds good, and handles as well as any mid 70's F-body we've had the pleasure of running. A well sorted car, the only thing not working is the reverse lights. All other functional items operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

In the late '70's, Springsteen sang, "I met her on the strip three years ago, in a Camaro with this dude from L.A....". Could he have been talking about a 1974 Type LT Z28? Maybe. But given the rarity of the car, probably not. This is for the person that wanted luxury, touring and performance wrapped up in a sporty car with room for four! Here's a code verified, one of less than 4,000 produced, (and how many could be left?), just itching for a new home and some time on public roads.
