Vehicle Description
1966 Ford Mustang GT Hardtop
"If you thought we couldn't improve on a winner, try Mustang '66!
For '66, we did the nicest thing we could think of, we changed the
Mustang very carefully. There's smart new ornamentation all around.
Also new, (and standard), are a 5 dial instrument cluster, 14-inch
low profile tires and full wheel covers. But the standard features
that give the Mustang so much of its potent charm are all here.
Just mention Mustang and you've set off a lively conversation. All
about fun, excitement, going places, doing things. Proof? Over
418,000 on the road in Mustang's first year, an all time record!"
From the 1966 brochure.
For consignment, a 1966 Ford Mustang GT hardtop with a title
verified 65,059 actual miles, owned by our consignor for 10 years
and restored by Performance Motors of Hanover, PA. While there are
seven external clues, 6 under the hood clues, 4 interior clues, 4
undercarriage clues, and 1 trunk clue to determining a real GT, in
this case, we were unable to verify its authenticity, a common
discussion and source of debate in the classic Mustang
community.
Exterior
Two stage Vintage Burgundy covers this car like a deep vat of
France's finest wine and is accented by the GT white rocker stripe
that envelops the Mustang emblem on the front quarter, just under
the GT badge. In front, inboard fog lights connect to the coral via
a GT chrome bar and are bisected by a horizontal trim piece of
their own, while in back the latch panel is painted black behind
the iconic three piece tail lights. Dual exhaust gets a gilded exit
via chrome rings of the valance in a spectacular feature that is
complemented by the round reverse lights on the same panel. Also in
back, the GT gas cap beyond the smooth trunk lid with excellent
gapping. 15-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels hold
staggered size tires and our consignor is including Mustang GT
hubcaps with the car. The paint and metalwork are fantastic and we
could not find any exterior imperfections.
Interior
Super fine black door panels included a column stitched insert,
contoured armrest, chrome framed courtesy light, and pistol grip
door release handles as part of the luxury interior package. Low
back black vinyl bucket seats are adorned with embossed horses on
the upper and that carries over the back bench and it's all in
immaculate condition. The wood rimmed steering wheel wears sporty
spokes and leads to the instrument cluster where woodgrain backing
is also a luxury interior feature and it surrounds the Rally Pack
gauge cluster that includes a tachometer and clock flanking the
embedded speedometer and smaller system gauges. An AM radio,
(converted to AM/FM), is augmented with an outboard 8-track player,
currently featuring Glen Campbell. In front of Glen we find a Hurst
shifter, white knobbed and rising from the floor that's dressed in
black loop carpet and Mustang branded rubber mats. A modern center
console will hold your drinks and hidden gems in the lidded
compartment and our black headliner is in excellent condition. The
trunk is show worthy too, with a period vinyl plaid mat and spare
tire with knock off hubcap.
Drivetrain
Yep, pop that hood at car shows because the bay is clean and shiny
and housing a 289ci V8 with 225 horsepower and drinking fuel via a
4-barrel carburetor. A Toploader 4-speed manual sends power to the
Ford 8" rear with conventional 3.00 gearing. Up front are disc
brakes and in the back, drums.
Undercarriage
Very clean underneath with no surface rust to speak of and no
visible fluid leaks, only some grease sling from the U-joint at the
transmission. The dual exhaust flows through stock style mufflers
before exiting through the rear valance. Suspension consists of
coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The near pristine machine fires up and we row the Hurst into first
gear and roll the '66 onto the loop where it provides good
acceleration, great exhaust tones, and straight tracking via 60's
series tires. The plethora of gauges are all registering and this
well sorted car scores 100 on the functionality test and we trot
this showpiece back to the stable. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
On the cover of "A Satisfied Mind" a solemn Glen Campbell is
perched on the back of a horse, a mustang if you will, in this case
a carousel ride. He sings, "The wealthiest person is a pauper at
times, compared to the man with a satisfied mind.". Well, how
satisfied would your mind be if this horse, a 1966 Mustang, was
your ride to perch on? You can't buy back your youth, he continues,
and we're reminded that each day as happy customers fulfill their
lifelong dream of owning the car they've always wanted. Is your
stable missing a Mustang? You might want to lasso this one
quick!
