Vehicle Description
1968 Ford Mustang Hardtop
"With minimal change to the 1968 Mustang, Ford upped the ante for
the '68 Sprint by offering two packages for its "See the Light
Sale" in the spring of 1968. Sprint Package A was available for six
cylinder and V8 models, adding C-shaped side stripes, wheel lip
moldings, full wheel covers, and a pop open gas cap. Package B was
for V8s only, utilizing the components from Package A but replacing
the wheel covers with Styled Steel wheels and adding grille mounted
fog lights." Motortrend, January 2008, "The GT that wasn't a
GT"
For consignment, a 1968 Ford Mustang hardtop showing 46,333 miles
which are not actual. It's one of 15,105 Mustangs that received the
Spring Promotion B package, according to the Marti report which
will accompany the car. The car has always been garage kept and was
a display car for Special Edition Mustangs during Carlisle's 50
Years of the Mustang celebration.
Exterior
Resprayed in the two stage version of the original Gulfstream Aqua,
this car gleams like a Caribbean beach, and has the contrasting and
noteworthy C-stripe that hooks around the faux quarter duct and
terminates as a spear on the front of the fender. In front, the
inboard fog lights are another defining characteristic. 14-inch
argent Styled Steel wheels are another Spring B marker and look
fantastic wrapped in 205/70R14s. A square side mirror is just one
part of the excellent brightwork on the car that also includes the
door handle, window frames, and bumpers. There's a polished rocker
panel and that's where we find the single exterior imperfection, a
small ding in the metal. Overall, the paint is excellent and even
without the Spring package, this is a show worthy, clean car.
Interior
Varying shades of aqua create visual interest on the door panels
where a dark insert, embellished with a silver trim line, contrasts
with the lighter outer shell and both doors present cleanly. The
pattern of dark inside light continues on front bucket seats, very
nice, with one seam on the driver's lower beginning to loosen and
some discoloration on the edge of the passenger. The rear seats and
their sidewalls are immaculate and even the knobs on the window
cranks are turquoise. As is the steering wheel, sporty and robust
compared to earlier Mustangs, working with the optional power
steering, and it leads to a two layered dash with small gauges on
the black upper and large gauges intersecting the black and aqua
like a Venn diagram. The AM radio was an ordered option that's
still in place as was the Cruise-O-Matic transmission, represented
inside by the T-handle shifter over aqua loop carpet. In the trunk
is a period plaid vinyl mat over the floor and around the
spare.
Drivetrain
A super clean engine bay reveals the 289ci V8 with a 2-barrel
carburetor and mated to a C4 3-speed automatic transmission that
sends power to the Ford 8" in back with 2.79 gears. Drum brakes are
found front and rear. The engine looks period and original, right
down to the battery and hose clamps and is show worthy
spotless!
Undercarriage
Mostly clean and dry underneath with minimal surface rust, a drop
of oil on the pan, and film of oil on the transmission which does
not appear to be actively leaking. Dual exhaust flows through shiny
MagnaFlow mufflers before looping over the axle and terminating as
downturned pipes out back. Suspension is made up of coil springs up
front and leaf springs in the rear.
Drive-Ability
We start up this pristine dream and the 289 fires up without
hesitation. Around the test loop we go where it accelerates nicely,
handles well, and stops as expected. This is a well sorted car in
which every function operates as it should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
To the average car person, this is a '68 with a cool stripe and
inboard fog lights. But to the Mustang aficionado, this is not your
average '68 hardtop. Special, even if not ultra rare, one in this
condition is a great find and this car, ordered for the
Philadelphia Ordering District, has never strayed far from home.
But it wouldn't mind relocating to California, Florida, or anywhere
else in the country where it would find a happy home.
