For Sale: 1955 Jaguar XK140 in Saint Louis, Missouri

Vehicle Description

The Jaguar XK140 built upon the success of the groundbreaking XK120, refining its formula with a host of engineering and design improvements. Introduced in late 1954, the XK140 retained the essence of its predecessor while incorporating a more comfortable and refined driving experience. Available in Fixed Head Coupe (FHC), Drophead Coupe (DHC), and Open Two-Seater Roadster (OTS) configurations, the XK140 featured subtle styling updates, including full-width bumpers and refined body trim. Underneath, improvements included a redesigned box-section chassis, larger torsion bars and anti-roll bars, enhanced braking, and the introduction of rack-and-pinion steering for more precise handling. Jaguar also addressed interior space, a critical update for the crucial North American market. The engine and transmission were repositioned three inches forward, increasing legroom, while the dashboard, steering wheel, and cowl were slightly raised for improved ergonomics. Under the bonnet, the XK140 retained the proven 3.4-liter inline six-cylinder engine from the XK120 SE, now rated at 190 horsepower in standard form. An optional MC (Special Equipment) package raised output to 210 horsepower with the addition of the C-Type cylinder head, making the XK140 a genuine 130-mph sports car. Production spanned from 1954 to 1957, with just under 8,900 units built before the XK150 took its place. Completed in December 1954, this XK140 Open Two-Seater Roadster was delivered new to the United States via Hoffman Motors in New York, finished in Cream over Red upholstery, as documented by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate. A factory left-hand-drive example, it retains distinctive period-correct features, including its rare factory steel wheels with removable rear fender skirts-an elegant touch that accentuates the XK140's svelte, aerodynamic lines. The subject of an older restoration to original specifications and colors, this car has taken on a pleasing character through regular use and care. The red interior is trimmed in authentic leather and vinyl materials, carrying over to the proper red Hardura trunk lining, and black mohair convertible top, and is complete with side curtains should mother nature come calling. Lifting the bonnet reveals the classic XK 3.4 liter inline-six and its signature polished alloy cam covers, twin SU carburetors, and porcelain black exhaust manifolds. This car retains its original numbers-matching block per the Heritage Certificate; however, the cylinder head has been changed to a G-series unit from an XK140 SE. Mechanically, this XK is in excellent order. In testing, it performed exceptionally well, with the cohesive feel of a car that's never been completely apart. Offering an ideal balance between the early XK120's pure lines and the later XK150's refinements, the XK140 is often considered the sweet spot of the XK lineage. This well-maintained example, with its rare factory steel wheels, original colors, and elegantly understated presence, is a compelling choice for classic rallies, touring events, and spirited weekend drives. With its proven mechanical integrity and authentic factory specifications, this XK140 Roadster is ready to be enjoyed and appreciated by its next caretaker. Offers welcome and trades considered.
