For Sale: 1934 Ford Model 40 in St. Louis, Missouri

Vehicle Description

Regarded by many Ford enthusiasts as one of the finest designs to own, the 1934 model year is quite the prize for any collector! Minor styling alterations marked the 1934 model body lines with raked front grill with wide surround, vertical hood slats with two release levers instead of one, and slightly smaller headlights & cowl lamps made for an incredibly handsome car that mimicked much more expensive vehicles of the same era. Engine durability was improved, and the 112" wheelbase frame was redesigned for added strength. The speedy Ford V-8 which increased output to 85 horsepower was a favorite of many buyers, including the notorious John Dillinger and Bonnie & Clyde!

Offered here is a very well survived 1934 Ford Model 40 DeLuxe Tudor Sedan finished in traditional black exterior, red wire spoke wheels & pinstripe, along with a gray cloth interior. The DeLuxe Tudor was a very popular Ford design providing classic coupe-like body lines, elegant chrome exterior equipment, and ample room for 5 passengers. This example remains incredibly solid and rust free coming from a longtime Dayton, Ohio collector since his purchase at Hershey in the late 1980's. It would be parked in his extensive climate-controlled Ford/Mercury collection until passing it along to another passionate Ohio collector in the Fall of 2021. It was already enhanced to be a superior driver and confident weekend cruiser. Features include rare 1935 Ford Spider hubcaps over wire spoke wheels, leaping greyhound radiator ornament, AM radio and speaker (in-operable), beveled interior mirror with clock, rear sunshade, amber fog lamps, and dual outside rearview mirrors.

Wearing an older repaint, the interior recently received new Bedford Cord cloth seating upholstery and floor matting/sound deadening material in 2023 by Quinn Auto Top to replace the factory original material that survived nearly 90 years. The door panels and headliner remain original. Under the hood lies the ideal 1937 date-coded 21 stud 221ci V8 engine with preferred insert bearings, higher 7.50:1 compression with cast iron heads, and block-mounted water pumps. Of note, the chassis and bellhousing numbers are matching, so the transmission remains original to the car. This engine was fitted with an Offenhauser aluminum intake and dual Ford Model 59 carburetors, Red's headers, and Smitty's 22" mufflers for same added performance.

After the ownership transition in 2021, it would be thoroughly vetted and freshened for road use once again. This included removing and tanking the heads and oil pan, flushing the block, checking the valves with professional cleaning and cutting as necessary. The deck surfaces were milled and new head gaskets installed, along with a new oil pan gasket. The radiator would receive a similar treatment being flushed, and the block fitted with new Speedway water pumps, gaskets, and fresh thermostat. The fuel tank was removed and professionally cleaned, etched, and sealed internally. The fuel pump was rebuilt and fitted with a new sediment bowl, lines, and necessary hardware. The Ford carburetors were rebuilt by Chris's Carb Shop in Dayton. A new 6-volt positive ground battery, generator with solid state cut-out, NOS starter switch, professionally rebuilt & timed distributor, plugs & wires were all installed for optimum starting and charging capacity.

For safety, turn signals were added along with seatbelts. The Coker Classic 6.00x16 whitewall tires are date-coded to 2019. To enhance highway speeds and overall performance, a set of 3.54 high speed ring & pinion gearing is included with the sale. Currently, it is fitted with factory 3.78 (standard) gearing which was flushed with new fluid during renovations. The correct 1934 shock/linkages were rebuilt along with new spring shackles front and rear.

Included with the sale will be recent service records, reproduction owner's manual, part catalog, and service booklet, copies of John Dillinger and Clyde Barrow letters written to Henry Ford, heat exchanger & plumbing, storage car cover, extra keys, extra interior upholstery fabric, and miscellaneous service parts. It is a remarkable driver and one to cherish for its solidness and mechanical attention it has received! Please call us with additional questions or to schedule your chance to review it in person! Thanks for looking!
