2012 marked the return of the legendary Boss 302 Mustang. Like the first iteration from 1969-1970, these cars saw only a two-year run and offered plenty of performance over a standard Mustang. Hailing from the southwest, this example shows just 16,800 miles from its single owner and has a clean history.
Everything is in the condition you would expect from such a low mile car. Finished in Race Red with black Boss 302 graphics, it is hard to miss. Protective film was applied to the leading surfaces to help prevent road rash and stone chips. This car also has removeable window tinting that obviously protects from the sun but also ties into the livery. Other unique features of the Boss 302 are the front grille with its blocked off fog lamp openings and the special 19” black aluminum wheels. Note the tires were replaced in 2024 due to age.
The Boss 302 is far from a flashy appearance package though; it is a big step up from a Mustang GT and has a lot of technology taken from the 302R race program. Let’s start with the engine. Factory rated at 444 hp with a 7,500 rpm redline, this variant of Ford’s 5.0L Coyote platform features many upgrades over non-boss platforms; forged crankshaft, race bearings, revised oil pan baffles, larger camshafts, CNC ported heads, high flow intake, and more. Other factory items include a K&N cold air intake, larger radiator with revised plumbing, an oil cooler, transmission cooler scoop, and finned differential cover. Factory headers feed the unique quad exhaust with removeable baffle discs for the side exits.
The engine feeds a 6-speed manual transmission through a high rpm clutch. This is followed by a carbon fiber plate limited slip rear end with 3.73 gears. The Boss 302 has a lower ride height with higher spring rates and 5-way adjustable dampers front and rear. A strut tower brace stiffens the front end, and stabilizer bars have stiffer bushings and a larger 25mm bar in back. The brakes use 14” rotors with 4-piston Brembo calipers in front and 11.8” rotors in back along with low expansion lines and a more aggressive pad compound.
All this equipment is put to full use through electronic measures. You get remapped traction and stability controls compared to the Mustang GT for more flexibility and performance on the track. The electronic steering offers three different settings. But most exciting of all is the red TracKey that applies a more aggressive engine tune which is evident from idle on up. Note the “Track Use Only” message that displays with its use.
The interior reflects the nature of this car. While it has the nice clean look introduced in the 2010 Mustang, it eschews technical gadgets (like Sync and navigation) and sticks to the basics which are all present and functional. The only Boss 302 features are the embroidered seats and special floor mats plus an Alcantara wrapped steering wheel. This one has the standard bucket seats instead of the Recaros, making it more universally comfortable while providing better ingress / egress and less wear (if you’ve ever had a car with heavy bolsters then you know). Documentation includes the window sticker, Ford certificate, DVD, all manuals, and a book on the Boss 302.
The Boss 302 brings a lot to the table. It not only lives up to the moniker’s heritage but also raises the bar further. And this example, with its clean history and low miles, is not only a fantastic car but also an intriguing investment opportunity. Especially if we have to wait another 40+ years for the next Boss.
