Vehicle Description
2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500
"In the early 2000s, Chevrolet decided to bring out a vehicle aimed
at the person that couldn't figure out whether they wanted a pickup
truck or an SUV. The Chevy Avalanche was the answer to the question
"why not both?". But what truly set the Avalanche apart was
something that GM called Convert-A-Cab or better known as the
"midgate". You could fold down the Avalanche's rear seat and rear
window, expanding the effective bed length to equal a full size,
longbed pickup." Drivingline.com, April 2022
For consignment, a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 showing 65,889
miles but the true miles are unknown. This first year example was
garage kept in Utah since new and has been well maintained. As one
of the most recognizable Chevrolet trucks, (Cadillac had a version
too!), its practicality is virtually unmatched and along with its
unique style, they're desirable today since production ended in
2013.
Exterior
Summit White covers this half Tahoe, half Silverado and gray
plastic cladding below creates a two tone truck topped by matching
gray sail pillars that looks like Baja style roll bars and help
frame the window over the midgate, which folds down to create a 2
passenger truck with an eight foot bed. It's large enough to hold
sheets of plywood and the hard folding tonneau means you can
transport cargo protected from weather. The rear bumper is like a
multi tool, not only absorbing love taps in the Lowes parking lot,
but also providing step ups and a landing zone for the tailgate. It
also frames the hitch and hook up underneath. Our truck is equipped
with added smoked rain guards on each window and substantial
running boards for the full length of the space between the wheels.
Those 17-inch wheels, some of which have curb rash and clear coat
issues, carry LT265/70R17 tires with a late 2018 date code and 10
ply sidewall strength. Overall, it's in great shape externally with
imperfections noted as some spots on the paint on the roof, a
circular rough spot in the cladding, slight bubbling in the white
paint in one area, and some moisture in the lens of a
headlight.
Interior
Let's start in the bed which has a plastic floor embossed with
decorative, and probably useful tire tracks, and the bed shows
usage. On the door panels, inserts artfully represent diamond plate
steel and the rest is molded plastic forming ergonomic areas for
handles, storage, and the armrest with switch panel. Cloth bucket
seats are not only tall backed, but tall from the floor as well,
here in gray cloth with those diamond steel inserts repeating, and
along with the rear bench for three, all are in great shape and
ready to take on a family or small work crew. That is unless you
fold the rear seat back down, in which case you open up the gate
and create a wide pass through for cargo. Up front, it's standard
Chevrolet truck stuff of the era, a robust steering wheel and well
appointed instrument cluster and dashboard with electronic range
selector and big, plastic knobs for the climate control under the
integrated AM/FM/CD radio. Gray carpet covers the floor, including
the massive center hump which travels to the back seat as well, and
the foam molded headliner and overhead console above are in great
shape.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a clean 5.3 liter V8, fuel injected and mated to a
4L60E 4-speed automatic which can engage the transfer case and
split power between 3.73 gears at both ends. Power disc brakes are
on all four corners.
Undercarriage
Some typical surface rust throughout but the underside is dryer
than Moab and boots and bushings look fine. The exhaust is a single
unit with an original equipment muffler that sends out a Y-pipe
that returns to a single pipe that exits behind right rear wheels.
A spare tire is mounted underneath, and the hitch shows some
typical deep corrosion that begins with peeling paint. Suspension
here is torsion bars up front and coil springs with a panhard bar
in the back.
Drive-Ability
It's like a crew cab pick up truck with a lot of real estate behind
you and a tunnel effect produced by the sail pillars but visibility
is generally good. The V8 delivers good power, the truck tracks
straight and stops well and the possibilities, even with the bed in
short mode, are endless! Functionally, all items work as they
should and we turn the big rig towards the mall. While Classic Auto
Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of
our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working
at the time of your purchase.
This is the Swiss army knife of vehicles. How many times have you
said to yourself, "I could really use a pickup truck right now!"
and then called your friend to borrow his? Well, now it's your turn
and you can even enlist the help of four more people for the job at
hand and sit them comfortably in the roomy, air conditioned cab.
Years from now, the short lived Avalanche will be a highly desired
anomaly that you won't see on the street. But right now, it's still
a usable and unique truck from the early 2000's that is starting to
cause double takes.
