Released in August 1969 as the ultimate version of the W111, the 280 SE 3.5 paired the original car’s timeless styling and incredible build quality with dramatically increased performance. As the W111 sedan had been replaced a year prior by the W108/109 twins, the 280 SE 3.5 was only available as a coupe or cabriolet through its production run ending in July 1971. Naturally, buyers and critics immediately fell in love with the combination of classic styling of the earlier models and its all-new V8 featuring Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection.
A full leather interior with accommodations for four along with a fully lined top in the traditional stacked German cabriolet layout meant the 280 SE Cabriolets could easily be driven all-year ’round. A fully independent suspension with disc brakes at each wheel was standard, further increasing comfort and safety. Due to their complexity, only 13 cars were finished per week on average. For example, each top required roughly sixteen hours of work apiece, with the robust metal framework being entirely concealed from view by a full interior headliner. In total, Mercedes-Benz produced just 1,232 examples between 1969 and 1971. As one of the marque’s last hand-built models, 280 SEs are highly vaunted by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The sensational 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet featured here is finished in classic Silver-Grey Metallic over a Black leather interior with a matching folding convertible top. This exquisite motorcar has been driven a mere 48,964 miles from new and is among one of the finest examples we've offered in years. Specified from the factory with desirable features such as a floor-shift automatic, power windows, and Behr air conditioning, this incredible Mercedes-Benz is ready to be shown or enjoyed. We are proud to offer this investment-grade 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet to the most demanding collector, investor, or enthusiast who desires to own one of the very best at an investment price!
