Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1964 Mercedes-Benz 230SL
four-speed manual. This W113 Pagoda has been in our personal
collection since 2014; it was a long-term California car prior to
our purchase. Presented in black with a black convertible top and
black interior, the hard top is finished in code 728 beige grey
metallic - a set of hubcaps matched to the hard top, as well as a
set in black, are included with the sale (for Pagodas with a
two-tone color scheme, the hubcaps should always match the hard
top). Factory steel wheels are wearing Vredestein Sprint
Classics.
We believe this was a Euro-market car as it has Euro
instrumentation, and it was in California from the mid 1970s
through approximately 2013. Like many of these cars, the fenders
were replaced at some point in the past - it does not have the
notches behind the headlight rings or the factory spot welds on the
fender lip beneath the hood. Per the data plate, the original color
was code 158 white grey; this car was color changed to black under
prior ownership. Trim and bumpers were re-plated when the car was
painted; paint and body overall present to a driver standard. There
are several patched areas in the floors.
The interior was likewise re-trimmed in black leather under prior
ownership; all gauges, lights and indicators are working properly
(including the clock), and the Becker Europa stereo has an aux
input mounted beneath the dash. Grey square-weave carpets were
installed about 10 years ago shortly after our purchase. The hard
top (including headliner) is in good condition; there is some minor
fraying around the edge of the soft top, but it remains
serviceable. Climate sliders have been rebuilt (along with flaps
and heater control valve) and function properly.
The 2.3 liter inline six is mated to a four-speed manual
transmission. Extensive service under our ownership (over the last
decade and approximately 10,000 kilometers) has included an MFI
pump overhaul, re-plated fuel injector lines, all new suspension
bushings, front and rear brakes, shocks, tie rod ends, rebuilt
shift linkage, electronic ignition upgrade, and more. In 2020 we
undertook a top-end rebuild (valve job) and partial reseal. Recent
tune up, valve adjustment and fluids. It runs well and is a lovely
car to drive.
We have driven this Pagoda to events and rallies all over the
southeast, including from Atlanta to the Amelia Island Concours
d'Elegance (where it was parked on the street), the Highlands
Motoring Festival, and the Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance (where
it was displayed in the MBCA section for Cars and Coffee). We've
even run the "Damn The Torpedoes" race from Athens to St. Marys in
it. Now that we live in Savannah full time, we drive it less and
less - it is a triple-black convertible with no A/C, after all -
and it's time after more than a decade of very fond memories with
this car to find it a new home.
While this is not a concours example, it has been driven regularly
and well cared for over the last 11 years. An original owner's
manual, spare, partial tools, both tops, a California blue plate
and old California registrations dating back to the mid 1980s, and
service records since 2014 are included. For more information about
