We purchased this striking Cinnabar Red '87 M6 out of Minnesota in
early 2024,
where it had remained with the previous owner since 2012. Sold new
in
Michigan, the car later moved to Missouri, then to Minnesota until
2012. Despite
its Midwestern history, this is an extremely dry, well-kept example
that has aged
gracefully. With 132,300 miles from new and having been recently
subject to an
extensive service (see Recent Services portion below) and a
thorough detailing,
this e24 M6 suits the bill of a tidy, well-sorted driver ready to
be wound out and
enjoyed by its next steward throughout the upcoming summer
months.
Exterior:
? Please do review the photos and video provided in the listing, as
the car is
shown in detail. Blemishes are all called out with complete
transparency.
Blemishes include some very minor clear peeling on the rear sail
panels
and near the trunk lid. Front lower valence has slight damage
from
curbing. There are a couple small dings over the right rear wheel
opening which are hard to notice.
? Cinnabar Red is the original color. Paint presents extremely
well. While it
does appear to have been at least partially resprayed the correct
color at
some point, paintwork was clearly done to a high standard. Body
is
extremely dry and straight with the exception of the
aforementioned
blemishes, and the car does have a clean CarFax which we received
with the car.
? No bubbling on the body, which is refreshing to see here, as 6ers
tend to
be fairly rust prone and this car has been in the Midwest its whole
life.
Area around the rear license plate lights is clean and dry, lower
corners of
the windshield, and the inside lips of the fenders/quarters are
nice and
straight. This car has clearly always been garage-kept and
responsibly
owned.
? Glass and light lenses are all clear and crack-free, Lights and
signals are
all functional.
? Exterior rubber and black plastic presents nicely, without
significant fade,
drying, or cracking.
? 17" AC Schnitzer Type 2 wheels are in excellent shape and are a
cool
period-correct accessory. Original wheels do not come with the car
with
the exception of the original spare, which is secured under the
trunk mat.
Michelin tires show minimal wear and are not dry nor hard, though
the
DOT number (3710) does indicate they have aged out (late 2010
manufacture date).
Interior:
? Interior is pretty impressive. There is some slight wrinkling of
the full
leather dash top just above the center vents, as visible in the
photos and
video.
? Tan sports seats appear to retain original leather and show only
minor
signs of wear. No major scuffs, just the basic crease lines to be
expected
from a ~130k mile, responsibly owned example. These are great
seats.
Polished sills and jambs are nice and clean. Rear seats were
clearly
seldom used.
? Odometer reads 132,300 and is functional and accurate based on
known
history, Carfax, and general condition.
? Air conditioning is R134 but kicks on but does not kick on.
? Original radio is functional and we do have the radio code. Heat
and fan
are good. Wipers, powered driver and passenger seats, locks,
and
handbrake are all good. Interior and exterior lights are
functional, horn
works, as does the service light panel on the dash.
? Headliner is in great shape. Sunroof is functional.
Mechanical / Underbody:
? This car looks quite good underneath. Very minor signs of age on
various
components, but dry and solid throughout. No active leaks. A
little
evidence of old fluid on the differential, but looks to be an
extremely slow
seep, certainly not an active leak.
? The car runs and drives beautifully. These S38B35-powered coupes
are
excellent highway-speed touring cars. The heavy lifting
maintenance
items have been completed over the course of our one-year
ownership
prior to listing for sale and it's now ready to be driven and
enjoyed.
? One tendency to be aware of is that it can be a bit difficult to
engage first
gear at times when moving. This has been investigated by two
different
shops and partially mended as of late, as described in the service
records
highlighted below.
? This M6 starts right up first turn, idles cool and steady, pulls
hard through
the gears, shifts smoothly, has good clutch feel, excellent
steering, and
the ride quality is very, very good. No rattles, clunks, or
tendencies of
concern. The car tracks straight down the road, and brakes straight
and
effectively.
Recent Services (Completed in 2024)
? $8,478. Completed by: German Auto Service, Ltd. Description:
Chicago
Car Club brings vehicle in, stating that it is going through
coolant. Cooling
system was pressure tested and cylinder bores checked with
stethoscope.
Found coolant pooling in cylinder 4 and coolant seeping in from
head
sealing surface on cylinder 5. Remove cylinder head and send to
machine shop. [see below record from Metric Mechanic]. Install
cylinder
head and camshaft housing. Replace coolant hose. Replace fan
clutch.
Flush brake fluid. Replace engine mounts. Upon test drive, first
gear
found to be difficult to engage while moving. Note: can shift from
reverse
to first easily. Replace shift lever bushings, bracket support with
bushing,
O-ring, shift rod shim, shift rod pin, shift boot. Flush
transmission fluid.
First gear now easier to find, though still can be a bit stubborn
if the
vehicle is not at a stop.
? Machine Shop: $5,750. Completed by: Metric Mechanic.
Description:
Stock head rebuild (shim, adjust, straighten) of original head.
Including
new head gasket and surface turbulence valves.
? $6,260. Completed by: German Auto Service, Ltd. Upon delivery
via
transporter, engine made a rattling sound upon startup. Vehicle
was
immediately shut off and brought back to German Auto Service
for
inspection. It was then found that the crankshaft timing mark did
not line
up and timing components showed no signs of failure but did appear
worn.
Tested cylinder leakage and found that all leakage was coming from
the
crankcase, indicating good valve sealing. Replace complete timing
chain
assembly (timing chain tensioner, guide rail, chain, cam sprocket
exhaust,
timing cover gasket, valve cover gasket, crank shaft sprocket,
tensioner
spring, front crank seal, oil pan gasket, oil pump O-ring and level
sensor
mounting). Extended test drive and delivery.
? Quest Detailing. Complete exterior and interior detailing,
including
replacement of BMW emblem and ceramic coating of entire car...for
more information please contact the seller.
