This fully restored 1947 FIAT 1100 S Mille Miglia "Gobbone" is a rare and historically significant vehicle, equipped with the correct Mille Miglia S engine. Designed by Dante Giacosa at the end of World War II, the 1100 S drew inspiration from the pre-war 508 C Mille Miglia. Its aerodynamic design featured a streamlined body without bumpers, fender skirts covering the rear wheels, and a tapered tail section. The most distinctive element was its three-part grille, with chrome bars arranged horizontally on the sides and vertically in the center, creating a striking visual signature that became synonymous with the 1100 S.
Under the hood, the 1089 cc four-cylinder engine was upgraded with an oil radiator, a centrifugal water pump, and a gear-driven camshaft to handle increased power. The result was an impressive 51 hp at 5200 rpm, paired with a dry weight of 825 kg, enabling the car to reach a top speed of 150 km/h. The 1100 S proved its racing pedigree at the 1947 Mille Miglia, where four berlinettas finished in the top ten, securing fifth, sixth, seventh, and ninth places overall.
About This Car:
This particular 1100 S is the only one delivered to Venezuela immediately after production. Nicknamed La Pulga (The Flea), it was raced by Giuseppe "Pulga" Santaanis and Gino Tomelli. A photograph by renowned photojournalist Sady Gonzalez captures the duo during a stop in Bogotá while competing in the Carrera Grancolombiana.
Later, the car was sold to the United States as a project vehicle. After changing hands, it was acquired by its current owner in Italy, who undertook a comprehensive restoration. The car is now registered in Italy and comes with a 2011 California title.
Restoration Details:
The restoration was carried out to the highest standards by some of Italy’s most renowned specialists:
Bodywork: Giorgio Golfetto in Treviso, a panel beater who works for Cognolato.
Paint and Reassembly: Faralli in Vico Pisano.
Engine and Mechanics: Jolly Car in Fucecchio, experts in racing and vintage cars.
Upholstery: Paperino Autotappezzerie in Poggibonsi.
The restoration was a labor of passion, with no expense spared. The engine and mechanics were upgraded for increased power, speed, and reliability, making the car ideal for endurance races like the Mille Miglia. The car retains its original S engine, complete with an oil radiator and a gearbox featuring closely spaced synchronizers for a fast and engaging driving experience.
A detailed file accompanies the car, including photos of the engine before, during, and after restoration, showcasing the engine number and the distinctive oil adapters with hoses typical of the S engine.
