60s E-TYPE Collection pair
The swinging sixties in pure automotive culture
When the hand-built Jaguar E-type with licence plate 77 RW was driven from Coventry to Geneva in March 1961 to be presented at the motor show alongside the coupé with licence plate 9600 HP, it made history. Never before had an automobile evoked such passionate feelings and British pride.
60 years on, Jaguar Classic is celebrating the re-unveiling of an icon with six matched pairs of restored E-type cars inspired by the 9600 H Coupé and the 77 RW Roadster. An exclusive drive from Coventry to Geneva also awaits the new owners.
1961: TWO EPIC DRIVES
The first E-Type caused a sensation at its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show and was driven to the event from the UK by Bob Berry, Jaguar's Managing Director, after being tested in advance by a hand-picked selection of journalists. This left Bob little time for the journey through France, and he arrived just 20 minutes before the flurry of flashbulbs at the motor show premiere.
The car, a coupé, was registration number 9600 HP.
Following the incredible public reaction, Sir William Lyons, the founder and boss of Jaguar, ordered another car to be sent from Browns Lane. Legendary Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis dropped everything and drove the 77 RW, a roadster, through the night to 9600 HP in Geneva, where it arrived just 11 hours after leaving the factory at an average speed of 69 mph (113 km/h !) - a journey that remains part of Jaguar folklore to this day.
Delivered as a pair, our E-Type 60 Collection cars capture the spirit of the originals and offer a rare opportunity to own a tribute to two of the most iconic E-Types of all time. Based on the 1963 3.8-litre models, both come with carefully selected enhancements and feature 60th Anniversary details unique to these cars.
Each 60th Edition model has been painted in a unique livery inspired by its 1961 predecessors that will never be seen again. A bespoke exterior emblem designed by Jaguar Design Director Julian Thomson will be the final and subtle visual enhancement to the exterior.
The 60s pair on display here is the only one of 6 pairs built for sale worldwide.
