Vehicle Description
1969 Dodge Charger R/T Hardtop
"Dodge hit its stride in 1969 with a whole new line of big cars
with new "fuselage" styling and the first of the aero cars aimed at
wrestling the NASCAR championship away from Ford. The Charger
Daytona won its namesake race in the hands of Bobby Isaac and swept
the first four places. The Daytona featured a two foot long
extended nose cone, a three foot high rear wing and curved back
glass, like the more subdued Charger 500. Later on, Isaac would set
a closed course record of 201.104 mph." thx Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T hardtop, showing 36,995
miles but the true miles are unknown. If a 1969 R/T is music to
your Mopar loving ears, wait until you hear this little ditty. This
R/T is a 2 owner car with a numbers matching drivetrain!
Aficionados may have already noticed the missing rear stripe, but
this car has V88 on the fender tag, and that means factory stripe
delete, an option few ordered.
Exterior
Stunning coverage, now in two stage, is factory paint code Q5 or
Bright Turquoise Metallic, and what a fantastic color for the car,
(of course, this body style would look good in just about any
color!). It highlights the lines including the broad shoulder line
and the contouring on the doors. Up front, the wide B-body is all
business, with a distinct grille with center feature, a hood that
is flat fronted but coved further back, and an arrow straight
chrome bumper. In profile, the epitome of muscle car, big
proportions that gently rise to the rear and an upright windshield
in front of long doors. Flying buttresses and shoulders that meld
into the flat decklid while carrying a race inspired gas cap, may
be one of the great American automotive designs, punctuated by
those horizontal tail lights and protruding dual exhaust. There's
substantial bubbling under the white vinyl roof which is in
otherwise good condition, and paint imperfections include bubbling
and rust near the buttress, bubbling in several other spots, some
uneven filler low on the fenders, and paint chips. There's also
extensive invasive rust on the inside rim of the decklid drip
rails.
Interior
The white interior begins with the door panels which are in decent
shape with the exception of the driver's armrest which shows some
wear. The white vinyl bucket seats show some discoloration but are
also wearing clear plastic seat covers front and rear, so the vinyl
is in good condition and the color change may be in the plastic.
The palette turns black beginning with the steering wheel with
stitch patterned horn ring and fronting an instrument cluster that
sets the large gauge off center and to the left, and smaller gauges
to the right, all on a textured plastic dash panel, all showing a
bit of patina but fully intact. An AM radio sits in the center with
nifty finger wheels for adjustments and push buttons for channel
selection. Faux woodgrain adorns the center console that houses the
automatic shifter and lockable storage bin. Black carpet provides
good coverage on the floor and a white, perforated headliner above
is in very good condition. The inside of the trunk is clean and
covered with a plaid vinyl mat and we note that the quarter skins
have been replaced.
Drivetrain
A different shade of turquoise dresses the numbers matching 440ci
engine under the hood, rated at an astounding 375 horsepower and
fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor. Clean but not pristine is how we
would describe this bay and when you're the OG, you don't have to
be overly showy! The original numbers matching A727 TorqueFlite is
mated to the engine, a 3-speed automatic transmission that sends
power to the 8 inch rear. Power brakes are provided and are
present as front discs and rear drums.
Undercarriage
Clean, driver quality underneath with a slight build up of road
dirt, some residual oil on the pan, and more caked on stuff on the
knuckles. Minimal surface rust is present. Dual exhaust travels
through stock style mufflers before finding an exit via chrome
tips. Suspension consists of torsion bars in front and leaf springs
in back.
Drive-Ability
We're riding on relatively fresh tires, 215/70R15's with a date
code of early 2022 on 15-inch Mopar Road Wheels and this provides a
comfortable drive that tracks straight. Of course, that's after we
cranked up the bad boy 440 and let the exhaust do the talking! The
big B-body is the king of the road, and it still feels large today.
We note a notable exhaust leak on our drive and the reverse lights
are not working. Those dreaded headlight doors won't lower either!
Beyond that, all available functions worked as they should. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Some of you probably didn't make it this far without going back to
the photos and swooning some more. It's not just an R/T, it's a
numbers matching R/T. Could this be brought up to be a 100 point
car with some TLC and elbow grease? Sure. But is it impressive just
as it is, love marks and all? Absolutely. It's a great original
spec and there simply aren't that many left, so it's an instant
showpiece. In the hierarchy of true muscle cars, this turquoise
treat is near the top of the food chain.
