Vehicle Description
This 1950 Hudson Custom Commodore Eight Convertible Brougham is a
terrific-looking, highly rare 50s convertible decked out with great
options! Introduced on February 10, 1950, the Hudson Commodore was
the top-of-the-line model for the independent automaker for its
1950 model line sitting above the entry-level Pacemaker and the
mid-level Super. Again utilizing Hudson's revolutionary post-war
"Step-Down" design, the '50 Hudsons were spacious and touted as
being smoother riding automobiles due to their lower center of
gravity. Enabling the Step-Down layout was Hudson's "Monobilt"
body/frame using a novel unitized body rather than a traditional
body sitting atop a separate frame. The 1950 aesthetic design was
largely left unchanged from the previous year's model, however the
Custom Commodore from 1949 became the Commodore Custom in 1950. Of
course, the 1950 Hudsons were adorned with new trim styling which
gave the cars an updated look. Up front for example, a new look
grille was a major highlight, comprised of an inverted "V" look
that would carry forward into the designs for the next few years.
Likely the biggest improvements for the 1950 Commodore was highly
luxurious interior designs. Luxurious options such as leather
interiors were commonplace in Hudson's premium Commodore and even
hydraulic power windows were standard equipment. Despite a booming
economy, and especially hot automobile market, Hudson still sat
towards the bottom of the list for American car manufacturers
sitting in 13th place among America's automakers. With relatively
low production, 1950 Hudsons are pretty rare automobiles and
perhaps the most rare was the Commodore Eight Convertible Brougham.
In total, a mere 424 Convertible Broughams were produced during the
1950 model year which makes this particular Hudson an even rarer
car to find today. This particular Hudson Commodore 8 comes to us
from several southern-based collectors all of whom appeared to take
great care of this wonderful car. Under the hood on this '50 Hudson
Commodore 8 is a 254 cubic inch inline 8 cylinder engine fed by a
single 2 barrel carburetor that together were said to have created
128 horsepower when new. The 254 Straight 8 is mated to a 3 speed
manual transmission with "Super-Matic" overdrive that is shifted
via its column-mounted "3-on-the-tree" shifter and makes for a
wonderful convertible to take for extended cruises. Exhaust exits
this Hudson's powerplant via a single exhaust system and out
through a chrome-tipped tailpipe. This Commodore 8 Convertible
comes loaded with options! The black canvas power convertible top
raises and lowers effortlessly as it's controlled by dash-mounted
switch. Additionally, when the top is in the down position, it
tucks neatly under a red boot that gives this Hudson a much cleaner
look while enjoying the benefits of having convertible. Dual chrome
outside mirrors are a welcome addition to any classic car as it
makes squeezing in and out of a tight parking space far less
stressful. A color-matched external sun visor adds further 50s
flair to this unique Convertible Brougham. Riding on a set of wide
whitewall tires mounted on red-painted steel wheels accented with
full wheelcovers, this 1950 Hudson Convertible Brougham has a
fantastic elevated look whether you're parked at the local car show
or cruising with the top down on a warm and sunny day.
Additionally, the rear wheels are tucked behind a pair of
color-matched fender skirts that add even more 50s flair. This
Hudson's body has been refinished in beautiful Laguna Blue paint
that completes the exterior look of this top-of-the-line
automobile. The roomy interior of this 1950 Hudson Custom Commodore
Eight Convertible Brougham is absolutely stunning! The front and
rear bench seats, along with the rear center folding armrest, have
been reupholstered in gorgeous red leather so whether you're
sitting up front or getting chauffeured around in the back, you're
sure to be very comfy. The woodgrain-trimmed upholstered door
panels, red carpeting, Hudson emblazoned steering wheel, and
woodgrain-trimmed dash all remain in wonderful condition and retain
a superb stock appearance. The interior is also extremely
well-optioned! All four power windows go up and down with ease, all
of which are hydraulic-driven and controlled with electric
switches. Additionally, you can easily adjust the front seat as it
is also powered by the hydraulic system. The instrument cluster is
brightly trimmed and comes equipped with a 110 MPH speedometer,
temperature gauge, and fuel gauge, along with indicator lights for
amperage and oil pressure. The dash is finished off with a
push-button AM radio, clock, glovebox, and various other controls.
Whether you're an avid Hudson collector or you want your first
classic car to be something rarely seen, this 1950 Hudson Custom
Commodore Eight Convertible Brougham would make a fantastic choice.
