Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle Hardtop
Some Chevelle factoids to whet your appetite. The Chevelle was
built in 10 different plants in two countries during its 10 year
run. There was a version of the Chevelle only available in Canada
that had a slightly different grille and trim. It was called the
Beaumont. 1964 was the only year U.S. built Chevelles had the model
listed as the first digit in the VIN. No Chevelles originally had a
woodgrain console. If you see one with a woodgrain console now,
it's likely from a Monte Carlo. The Chevelle is quite the movie
star, appearing in over 1,600 shows and movies. It's had starring
roles as recently as the Fast & Furious franchise.
For consignment, a 1968 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle hardtop with a
title verified 80,359 actual miles and a plethora of go fast
modifications that are not immediately apparent by looking at the
exterior. Because the Chevelle lineage is replete with fast cars,
we can't exactly call this car a "sleeper", but let's just say you
don't want to be napping at a red light, or red tail lights are all
you'll be seeing of this black and blue rocket.
Exterior
The car is finished in two stage Grotto Blue paint with an accent
stripe that transverses the nose, follows the descending line of
the fender, then streaks along the bottom panel, terminating just
before the rear bumper wraps around. Smooth panels dominate the
body and dual rising swells on the hood lead back to twin cowl
vents. 396 is expressed on all four sides. Is that what powers this
Chevelle? Read on to find out! Meanwhile, thin horizontal tail
lights connect visually via a black trim piece on the latch panel,
as straight as the chrome bumper below it, and over rectangular
exhaust tips below. A "Hurst Equipped" emblem also resides on this
trim piece offering a distinct red and black warning to followers.
15-inch Rally wheels carry slightly staggered 60 series tires onto
which the car hunkers down on slightly, a little bit leaner and a
little bit meaner that your run of the mill Chevelle. Overall,
paint and bright work are presentable and the only imperfections we
note is an area of bubbling near a wheel opening and some solvent
pop and inclusions in the paint.
Interior
Blue on blue means this car features the hue on the inside where
clean door panels retain the typical 60's use of patterned vinyl
coverage with linear designs in a monochromatic presentation,
leading to blue vinyl bucket seats that are in great shape as well.
The back bench is without wrinkles and barely looks used and the
blue loop style carpet used in front flows back to cover the rear.
Up front, a 3 spoke sport steering wheel fronts the simple,
standard instrument cluster that's augmented by a column mounted
tachometer and a triple pod mounted under the dash. In the center,
just the vent panel is present, unaccompanied by a radio. Rising
from the transmission hump is indeed a Hurst shifter, a black
knobbed beauty with a rubber accordion boot and polished mounting
flange. The headliner is a little loose but intact, and the carpet
shows a bit of soiling but we've seen worse. The trunk is clean and
lined with a vinyl mat and matching material covers a spare tire as
well.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a cleanly installed 461ci V8 with an estimated 470
horsepower. Things that went into achieving that power rating
include it being bored .030 over, KB pistons, Plasma moly rings, a
Clevite .544 lift, 231 duration hydraulic cam, the crank was turned
10/10, and GM rods were installed. To handle that power, the Tremec
TKX 5-speed manual has a new McLeod clutch, flywheel, throw out
bearing, and bellhousing. Power is routed to a Ford 9" Quick
Performance axle in back with 3.55 gears. The builder didn't
neglect the brakes as we power discs on all four wheels. Naturally,
headers are on board to begin the exhaust process and a 4-barrel
carburetor delivers the dino juice to the engine.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with minimal surface rust, mostly reserved for the
headers, and dry conditions are found on the pans. Rack and pinion
steering has been added, while the suspension remains fairly
standard with coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs
in the rear. The dual exhaust travels through FlowMaster mufflers
before finding their way to the chrome tips out back.
Drive-Ability
Clean and show worthy but otherwise relatively unremarkable, that
is, until you turn the key and the big block comes to life with big
noise, just the right exhaust tone to scare the neighbors without
setting off car alarms. We row the gears and roll this blue beauty
onto the blacktop where power is obvious, straight tracking is
exhibited, handling is enjoyed, and functionality is assured.
Everything on board worked as it should and the brakes are also
stupendous! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Here we have sort of a low key Pro Touring car without over the top
dramatics and flare. Just a true, blue, straight forward tidy ride
that is as impressive to drive as it is to look at. The builder
recommends 93 octane plus and high zinc racing oil for this baby,
nothing less will do! If you're looking for a cool cruiser for show
and go, this Chevelle awaits your interest.
