Vehicle Description
1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 Hardtop
"The second generation of Chevrolet Chevelle was introduced for the
1968 model year. This updated generation of Chevelle saw updated
styling, as well as improved mechanicals. Like the previous
generation, a wide range of body styles were offered, including
sedan, hardtop, convertible, coupe, station wagon, (Nomad), and
coupe utility, (El Camino). Ten engine options were available, with
two inline six units and eight V8 units with the 7.4L unit having
the largest displacement. Production of the second generation
lasted until 1972, when it was replaced by the Third Generation
Chevrolet Chevelle." Thx Classic.om
For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 hardtop showing
1,129 miles which are not actual. This car's been the recipient of
a frame off restoration that took place over six years and much of
the sheet metal was replaced with either old new stock or authentic
parts from donor cars. The engine and transmission were rebuilt and
the interior, vinyl roof, power steering, power brakes and radio
were all replaced. Along with some awards and recognition from the
AACA in the form of a Jr win, the car's won numerous first place
trophies.
Exterior
And speaking of first place, the car wears a two stage coat of
Olympic Gold which is a fine color for the car, sandwiched by the
black vinyl top and black tires wrapped around 14-inch Magnum 500
wheels with black inserts for a tasteful color combination. A band
of black trim connects the distinct tail lights and the coveted SS
badge sits center, while oval exhaust tips denote this car means
business. Up front, square bezels with round corners envelop each
of the four headlights flanking a heavily segmented grille over a
beautiful chrome bumper that takes in the marker lights down low.
That fine chrome is in line with the quality of all the metal trim
on the car, in great shape. The vinyl top and paint are also
excellent, and it doesn't take long to realize why this car has
racked up so many awards. We could not find any glaring exterior
imperfections.
Interior
Clean black vinyl door panels have multiple width ribbed sections
and of course, a small SS badge leading to a near flawless split
bench with headrests and decorative buttons on the back, a style
that continues on the back bench where belts are provided for three
occupants. The black steering wheelleads to a fairly typical
instrument cluster for the era with a large speedometer to 120mph,
and most other functions, including tachometer, stacked in the
right dial. Simple, basic and clean is how we find the center stack
with just a vent panel and AM radio, while black loop carpet coats
the floor protected by Chevelle mats. Up above, the headliner is
not unlike what would have rolled off the showroom floor in '69. A
spare tire and period plaid mat occupy the spotless trunk.
Drivetrain
An orange block is the basis for the 396ci L35 V8, rated at 325
horsepower which is linked to a TH400 3-speed automatic
transmission sending power to the rear 12 bolt with a stamping for
3.07 gears and Positraction. The engine was rebuilt with new
bearings, .030 over, KB pistons, a high performance Comp cam, and
the heads were ported and polished. The bay is kitchen counter
clean, and chrome valve covers pop against the orange iron and
everything else looks factory fresh. The distinctive gold power
booster is in there too, backing up the front disc and rear drum
brakes.
Undercarriage
If you're into clean undercarriage, this one will likely take your
breath away. Call it showroom condition, factory fresh, or minty
mint, it's almost too good to drive this car on anything but
carpet! Another top 20 contender for "best undercarriages we've
seen at Classic Auto Mall" it is clean, glossy black, (or satin,
depending on the component), and free of any kind of imperfection,
discoloration, or errant fluids. Okay, maybe the frame kissed the
ground once or twice, but with some fresh paint, it's hardly a
flaw. Meanwhile, the dual exhaust flows through its pipes, then
stock style mufflers before exiting to the atmosphere via chrome
tips. Suspension here is made up of coil springs in the front and a
4 link with coil springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
Don't let the commuter car split bench seat fool you, this is a
muscle car through and through. And that's made immediately evident
upon start up, as the raucous V8 emits a healthy burble from the
two pipes out back. The car delivers good power, and we know
there's more on tap than we need on our test loop, plus we don't
want to kick up gravel! She tracks straight, rides smoothly, and
stops well. All functions on this well sorted car work as intended.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you're looking for a pot of gold at the end of the automotive
rainbow, you just found it. This is a turnkey show winner, a clean
example of an iconic car and the hard work has been done for you.
Now, all you have to do is dust 'er off, keep the fluids fresh, and
acknowledge the thumbs ups you're gonna get on the way to the show.
