1969 MG MGC Convertible
"The arrival of the MGC in 1967 was greeted with mixed reactions
both from enthusiasts and the motoring press. It can be described
as one of the most controversial sports cars ever produced from
Abingdon and during its short life, (1967-1969), the car was never
short of attention, particularly from the press. The arrival of the
MGC was partly due to the flagging sales of the Austin Healey 3000
and the fact that the original design of the MGB monocoque
structure was capable of taking larger power units than the 1800 cc

For consignment, a 1969 MG MGC convertible showing 24,369 miles
which are not actual. This car was purchased in England and
restored by MG specialists there, then shipped to the U.S.,
overhauled and garage kept and fair weather driven its entire post
restoration life. There's some real pedigree here and a very nice
example of one of the less common MG's you're bound to see at All
England shows.
Exterior
There are two desirable exterior colors, (subjectively), you want
on a British sports car, and red is one of them! Like the scarlet
tunic of the British army, this car is proudly bathed in Tartan Red
and despite the slight scowl formed by the toothy grille and power
bulge hood, this presents as a happy and eager little car that
coyly begs to be driven. The waist is enhanced by a polished trim
piece that runs stem to stern, picking up on the glean of the
15-inch Minilite replica wheels and tail ends of wrap-around chrome
bumpers at each end. MG's diminutive tail lights cap the rear
fenders, reverse lights on the latch panel, and a smooth decklid
presents like a billiard 3 ball. The distinctive hood, with cross
trim and an extra offset bulge is a stunning feature, backed by a
chrome cowl intake and robust polished windscreen frame. Up top,
the black canvas top shows slight patina and hazing of the plastic
window but is fully intact. Beyond that, we could not find any
glaring exterior imperfections.
Interior
Simple black vinyl door cards are tidy and in very good condition
and paving the way for the front bucket seats, well padded and
black and the tuck and roll stitching could use a deep detail, but
as is they are in beautiful shape. A beefy, sporty leather wrapped
steering wheel fronts a typically simple dash with main gauges
split from the center and the only color on the black faced dials
is the orange and red cautionary colors on the tach. Knobs for vent
control are presented as tactile pieces providing a good grip that
can be felt through your leather driving gloves, just next to the
asymmetrical glove box door that is always a fun feature. A black
knobbed stout shifter is on the floor which in turn, is covered in
very nice black low pile carpet. The trunk is barren but red, and
is home to a matching spare.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a clean and endlessly interesting 3.0 liter inline
six, putting out 145 horsepower and fueled by 3 Weber side draft
2-barrel carburetors. A 4-speed manual transmission backs the 6
cylinder, sending power to the rear axle with 3.307 gears. Disc
brakes are supplied in the front and drums in the rear.
Undercarriage
Glossy red paint dominates the underside where minimal surface rust
is found and only residual oil on the pan. The dual exhaust travels
in tandem down the length of the car before encountering Maniflow
mufflers just before leaving the shade of the underside as twin
chrome tips out back. Suspension consists of upgraded torsion bars
up front and leaf springs in back and we confirm polyurethane
bushing for both front and rear suspension. An LHD "Quick" steering
pinion is onboard giving the car a 2.9 lock to lock turn instead of
3.7.
Drive-Ability
And that shorter lock to lock is immediately noticeable as we
circle the MGC around the test loop, handling assisted by improved
suspension and that classic low center of gravity. Obviously, this
car provides a more spirited ride than the "typical" MG and this
well sorted car enjoys a completely functional operation. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions

"From England With Love" would be the title of this car's
soundtrack and this UK ex-pat now enjoys life in the states where
it is a stand out among legendary British sports cars. Not only a
wonderfully sorted car, but a blast to drive and the perfect
antidote to a boring weekend. If you live in warmer climes, year
round fun is at your fingertips with this little go getter. Those
of use with seasons can enjoy this car April through October, then
tuck it in a small space as we wait for the ground to thaw.
