Vehicle Description
1973 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe
"They ride better and don't nibble and dart over road
irregularities as did last year's bias belted tires. Altogether,
they must be acknowledged as an unalloyed improvement. Which is the
way it is with the latest Corvette. Because it looks pretty much
the same on the surface as it did six model years ago, there is a
tendency to think the same car exists beneath. It doesn't. Zora
Arkus-Duntov has been concentrating on the details. And when he
says he knows what is best for the customers, believe him." Car and
Driver, Dec. 1, 1972
For consignment, a 1973 Chevrolet coupe showing 81,637 miles which
are not actual. This chrome laden sports car now sports a 383ci
stroker and plenty of newer parts along with a remote to switch
exhaust from side pipes to "normal" exhaust, and a custom paint job
that's as sweet as its juicy namesake.
Exterior
Reminiscent of some early Hot Wheels, this time in full scale, the
sultry lines of the smooth 1973 are coated in Tangerine Chrome
which describes both the color and the depth of the dark orange.
And just before you're spellbound by its uniqueness, the big wheels
grab your attention, 18-inch five spoke beauties carrying low
profile 255/45ZR18's on each corner with a mid 2020 date code. But
your eyes won't linger there long as they're drawn to the showy
side pipes featuring "Stingray" and a crossed flag die cut into the
chrome heat shield. Out back, the flying buttress design envelopes
the flat rear window and from there the smooth decklid leads to
modernized tail light lenses, their domed shape reflecting light as
well as the paint. The split rear bumper makes way for the license
plate and hovers over square exhaust tips cut into the roll pan. At
a distance, the car looks flawless. Get super close and
imperfections such as scratches, uneven filler, cracks, scuffs, and
chips appear, but not in great numbers.
Interior
Nothing over the top showy about the door panels, but that doesn't
detract from their simple and clean design that integrates a
slightly protruding armrest that takes in the actuator and locks in
an upsloping lean. New leather seat covers in black, dress the
bucket seats and wear the crossed flag, and all looks clean. An
aftermarket wrap covers the steering wheel rim, while three spokes
enter a center hub where the flags make another appearance. The
painted black dash is in good shape, housing two main gauges up
front and five more in the center, including a clock, while an
added gauge is mounted under the dash. The wide center console is
home to a skull handled shifter, the vent control panel, ashtray,
and engine info plate, accurate to the increased cubes placed under
the hood. Low pile black carpet covers the floor and the back cargo
area and is in a nice condition and above us T-tops are cradled in
a polished metal frame.
Drivetrain
A highly polished powerplant resides in the clean bay, a 383ci
stroker V8 putting out an astounding 464 horsepower. It wears a
Speed Warrior intake and a new Holley 4-barrel carburetor, all
linked to a TH400 3-speed automatic which routes power to the rear
axle with 3.08 gears and Positraction. The battery is newer as is
the starter and alternator, while headers are on board to exhaust
the spent petrol. Disc brakes are employed on front and rear
wheels.
Undercarriage
Generally clean but driver quality underneath with minimal surface
rust, mostly reserved for the driveshaft. There's definitely some
oil from the rear differential and it's enough to have dripped onto
a passing exhaust pipe. That pipe is part of a more elaborate
system that affords the driver to electronically switch from purely
side pipe exit to short pipes and traditional exit out back.
Suspension consists of coil springs up front and the Vette's
complex rear independent, race inspired suspension that includes
tubular axle drive shafts, transverse strut rods, torque control
arms, and a transverse leaf spring.
Drive-Ability
We hop in this tangerine dream and crank the stroker 383 to life
which leads to a raucous bellow from the side pipes. The big wide
18's carry the car with surefootedness albeit slightly higher than
your average C3, tracking straight and handling very well, backed
by acceleration and power on tap. As far as functionality, we note
there are no reverse lights, the heater blower does not work nor do
the high beams. Everything else, however, works as intended. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you're looking for a Corvette with some show stopping flash,
this might be your pick of the crop. Astound show goers with the
wild paint, a modern take on Corvette's original Orange Metallic,
and then really WOW them when you pop the hood and blind them with
shiny objects. Sure, that's fun. But getting to the show and
leaving the show cap your experience with some sweet sounds and
behind the wheel fun.
