Vehicle Description
1989 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz
"You are surrounded by extra touches in the most luxurious of
personal coupes, Eldorado Biarritz. An exclusive formal cabriolet
roof treatment highlights the exterior, and new high gloss genuine
birdseye maple accents the interior." From the 1989 sales brochure.
So, what is a Biarritz, exactly? It's a city in France of which
Victor Hugo wrote in 1843, "I have not met in the world any place
more pleasant and perfect than Biarritz."
For consignment, a 1989 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz with a title
verified 24,055 actual miles. Here's a well preserved personal
luxury coupe with a beautiful blue interior. Of the 20,633
Eldorados sold in 1989, just 7,174 of them were Biarritz models in
the second model year sporting a 4.5 liter V8.
Exterior
An overall shorter design was introduced in 1986, and although only
16 inches shorter than previous models, the configuration with
shorter overhangs and narrower C-pillars created a car that
exaggerated its reduction. This one is covered in white and has the
telltale cabriolet "treatment" that is delineated by brushed nickel
trim that also frames the rear quarter window. Up front, composite
headlights, white bumper covers and clear lensed marker lights
enhance the frosty profile while the chrome crowned eggcrate grille
keeps things "Caddy". A bird's eye view shows a sunroof and doors
that are contoured into the roofline and the textured vinyl end
that's in great shape. Vertical tail lights handsomely bookmark the
decklid which compared to the rounded front, maintains Cadillac's
angular characteristics. Overall, the paint and trim is in
excellent shape with imperfections noted as various scratches and
edge wear, flex cracking on the rocker panel, a small crack in the
plastic door guard, and some dings on the wire wheel covers.
Interior
Blue vinyl molded door panels are clean and elegant with metal
toggles to control a variety of functions and a blue carpeted kick
panel that takes in a speaker on each door. Inviting blue leather
bucket seats with regal button tufted padding occupies the front.
There's some minor compression and patina wrinkling on the driver's
seat but the rest, including the rear bench, are further enhanced
with opera style lights on the inner C-pillars. In the cockpit, a
wood accented steering wheel, also blue, presents the horn and
cruise control buttons on the horizontal spoke while a leather
wrapped rim provides a good grip. Wood frames the digital dash as
well with a series of idiot light and levered switches flanking the
main screen, all in great shape. A Sanyo AM/FM/Cassette player has
been added while the center stack is reserved for the A/C panel and
a Driver Information Center that reports everything from time and
temp to fuel consumption data. Plush blue carpet covers the floor
with "toes deep" abundance and along with the headliner, presents
in very nice condition. We take a break from the solid blue
interior to note the trunk that is finished in gray flannel
panels.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, a transverse mounted and driver quality 4.5 liter
V8 rated at 155 horsepower, fuel injected and tied to a 4T60
4-speed automatic transmission keeping the spin up front with 2.97
gears. This luxury cruiser is afforded power disc brakes front and
rear.
Undercarriage
About what you would expect from a 24,000 mile car, very clean
underneath with minimal surface rust and patina and no sign of
errant fluids. As an FWD car, much of the underside is composed of
flat panels, very clean, with a tunnel running down middle which
houses the single exhaust which then snakes to the right, enters a
stock style muffler, then exits via a steel pipe behind the rear
bumper. Both front and rear possess independent suspension with
coil springs.
Drive-Ability
We take a seat in this little lap of luxury and turn the key for
this quick starter with the smooth idle, then shift into Drive and
send it to the test loop where the car tracks straight, has plenty
of power underfoot, and with the shorter wheelbase, handles better
than the land yacht Eldo's of yesteryear! With its low miles, every
bell and whistle chimes on cue and functions properly. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
When Cadillac reduced the size of the Eldorado, devotees scoffed,
but the new configuration tried to appeal to a broader audience. As
a result, however, sales were not great, and our car represents a
rare opportunity for one that wasn't driven that much and has many
comfortable miles ahead. As people become more nostalgic about the
80's the further we get from them, a car like this would evoke
smiles and memories if parked in a car show and the tufted leather
seats are already classic!
