Vehicle Description
STK 3979 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner
The folks in Detroit were producing muscle cars long before someone
coined the phrase. They were larger and heavier than their mid-size
counterparts, but had amazing powertrains. This 1962 Galaxie 500XL
Sunliner is a rare example of an early Ford 'muscle car'. (Based on
engine casting numbers and data plate information, it appears that
all major mechanical components are original. Ford did not stamp
actual VIN numbers on most components until 1967-68.) This Sunliner
left the factory optioned with a 406ci 'G-code' FE engine that was
fitted with 3x2 carburetors. It is believed to be 1 of only 297 '62
Sunliners equipped with this powerplant. The 406 utilized a new
casting design with thicker cylinder walls than previous FE
designs. This stronger design was later used in the famous 427ci
motors. This 'Super High Performance Tri-Power' FE was rated at
405hp with three Holleys (correct, list/date codes), mild
performance cam and factory cast iron "shorty" headers. It is
backed by a Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed manual gearbox and the data
plate indicates an open differential fitted with 3.50:1 gears.
This handsome Sunliner has been the beneficiary of a careful
restoration that was performed in 2012. The 2-stage respray of the
Rangoon Red finish is virtually flawless and accents include an
abundance of chrome trim and a near flawless white convertible top.
Factory spinner hubcaps on steel wheels mount 15" Goodyear
whitewall bias-ply tires. The virtually original interior is an
invitation to go back in time. Features include striking original
vinyl upholstery, tinted glass, bucket seats, console w/factory
shifter, classic wheel, original carpeting and a stunning dash w/AM
push button radio. A detailed chassis is rock-solid and equipped
with manual steering, manual drum brakes, new exhaust and new fuel
tank. This stunning Galaxie 500XL Sunliner must be seen to be
appreciated and will soon have a new Blue Oval owner who loves the
'60s. ALL VEHICLES SOLD "AS IS".
