Any Knight Rider fan will agree that the third generation of the
Firebird is an exceptionally striking vehicle from any angle. Sleek
and sporty, the 1982 to 1992 models draw attention anywhere they
go. However, if we're being honest with ourselves, if these cars
had one weak point, it would be under the hood. That sentiment is
exactly why this particular 1991 Pontiac Firebird Formula LS
Restomod WS6 is such a stellar vehicle. Fully repainted in Medium
Green Pearl, this Formula sports the late-model front fascia of the
third gen's final two years, along with its signature T-tops to
allow for the open-air fun of a convertible without sacrificing the
rigidity of a coupe.
Inside, we find a new Beachwood-colored interior that has been
redone to mimic the car's original look. Power mirrors, power
locks, power windows, and cruise control all allow for a
comfortable ride, while the brand-new air-conditioning system just
needs to be gassed up to get it going. An upgraded three-spoke
padded steering wheel sits just in front of the big four-pod gauge
cluster, while an analog set of HVAC and radio controls for the
AM/FM/cassette player make adjustments easy without taking your
eyes off the road.
Under that cowl hood is where this Firebird really sets itself
apart. A 5.3-liter aluminum-block LS V-8 with less than a thousand
miles of use since it was rebuilt waits to be fired up. New rod and
main bearings, new pistons, a high-volume oil pump, LS6 cam, LS6
valve springs, new intake valves, and an Edelbrock hi-rise intake
manifold all work in harmony with an Edelbrock Pro-Flo EFI system
to create fourth-generation power inside this gen-three body. That
power is routed through a 4L60E four-speed automatic transmission
before being sent out to the Ford nine-inch Positraction rear end,
fitted with launch-friendly 3.90:1 gears to get this bird in flight
down the road with alacrity.
