Porsches are special kinds of automobiles that many connect with,
some ordering their dream car and often keeping it for years, or
even decades. This 1964 Porsche 356SC is one such example, with the
original owners keeping this special coupe for more than half a
century. Used as a daily driver until 1985, taken out for special
occasions thereafter, and finally receiving a ground-up restoration
between 2001 and 2003, this 356 led a charmed life.
Completed at the Porsche factory on November 7th, 1963, it was
optioned in Slate Grey over black leatherette, with ventilated
chrome wheels, extended steering column, chrome horn ring, and
Dunlop tires. Jerry and Patricia Stebbins purchased the car from
none other than Vasek Polak, the first official Porsche-only
dealership in the United States, located in Hermosa Beach,
California. Jerry and his wife Patricia enjoyed their 356SC for
many years, taking long road trips up and down the coast, and
across the country. When they weren't traveling Jerry used it as
his main mode of transportation from purchase in 1964 all the way
until 1985. Once it was retired from daily duty, it was kept in
their garage where it was taken out on special occasions.
Jerry and Patricia kept the pristine 356 in their garage when not
in use, protected under a cover and with a dehumidifier to ensure a
stable environment. As time progressed the car saw less use due to
Jerry and Patricia's age, and with the passing of Jerry in 2017,
Patricia finally made the hard decision to let go of the Slate Grey
356 after 53 years of continual ownership.
When Bruce Canepa discovered that the Stebbins' 356 was available
for purchase, he knew that the original Slate Grey SC Coupe would
be a perfect foundation for one of Canepa's high performance
"Outlaw" builds. Upon delivery to Canepa, the 356 was thoroughly
inspected, and found to be in incredible corrosion-free condition
throughout. The entire car was then completely disassembled down to
every last individual component, nut and bolt, and subjected to a
complete concourse-level restoration/"outlaw" build and build in
Canepa's award winning facility.
Canepa restorations are extensive, detail-oriented, with very
intentional decisions being made throughout that benefit from Bruce
Canepa's decades of design and driving expertise. These decisions
range from minor to major performance modifications, and simple to
complex aesthetic improvements, providing a cohesive and tasteful
build each and every time. This results in a car that you want to
drive and be in, one that remains comfortable and fun to
experience, and remains tasteful as the years pass along.
An Outlaw 356 needs to be able to handle, and Canepa's upgraded
suspension does just the trick. 6" wide wheels, painted in Liquid
Metal Silver and fitted with Pirelli P6000 195/65-R15 performance
tires, are matched with upgraded torsion bars, Koni shocks, and
lowered ride height for a more aggressive stance, and aligned to
Bruce's preferred specification. The 356 was now able to handle how
it looked and sounded.
The exterior received an extensive amount of updates and details
that will catch the eye of Porsche enthusiasts. Canepa refitted the
356's bumpers in order to pull them closer to the body for a
sleeker profile, and including the addition of Carrera trim, in
which a Carrera rear valance in matching Slate Grey was added,
revealing the custom dual-tip exhaust system. The bumper
overriders, the side lower rocker molding trim and tail light
reflectors were then deleted. On the front of the car the grilles
were deleted, exposing the auxiliary alloy oil cooler. European
headlights were installed to upgrade forward lighting, including
higher rated bulbs to better illuminate dark roads ahead while
driving at speed. To complete the exterior, an old school Sebring
mirror was refinished in Slate Grey and attached for a subtle
racing touch.
The Outlaw theme continues to an important part of the car where
the driver will spend the most time: the interior. Canepa's expert
upholstery artisans crafted an exquisite space filled with the
finest leather and materials that a driver can see, feel, and
appreciate. Upon opening the door, you see that the interior is
fully trimmed in custom green leather, from the custom pleated door
panels with armrests replaced by custom chrome door pulls, along
with the rear and side panels. Pyramid rubber entry sills greet you
as you enter and sit in the custom trimmed leather GT Speedster
bucket seats. Medium gray square-weave carpet covers the seat
backs, adding sportiness to the interior, along with latch & link
seat belts keeping you secured comfortably at high speeds. The same
medium gray square-weave carpet throughout, with a matching
carpeted center tunnel, and the Slate grey body color-matched dash
and shifter base further accent the green leather interior. Your
right foot rests on a green leather accelerator heel pad, and a
color coordinated Alcantara headliner and sun visor sit above you.
Green leather luggage straps with chrome hardware sit perfectly in
the rear of the interior, now more spacious with the rear seats
removed and trimmed in the same medium gray square-weave carpet.
Custom made, jewel-like GT-style gauges are complete with a 160 mph
speedometer, a tri-functional indicator gauge with oil temperature,
pressure, and fuel level, and a 7,000rpm redline tachometer, framed
by a stunning reduced-diameter period wood-rimmed steering wheel.
In the front trunk, the fuel tank was painted the same Slate Grey
as the body, tying all interior components together for a seamless
and timeless design.
With Canepa's engine room fully occupied by 959SC upgrades and
motorsports builds, it was decided to send the original
numbers-matching engine to 356 guru and expert, John Willhoit of
Willhoit Auto Restoration in Long Beach, California. Known
worldwide for their famous WR 2.2 specification engines, these hot
rod flat-four engines extract more power and more torque through a
series of time-tested upgrades and optimizations. This includes an
84mm stroker crankshaft with matching Carillo connecting rods, 91mm
Durabar cylinders and CP pistons, topped with custom CNC-ported
big-valve heads and matched big bore manifolds, and fed with Weber
44IDF carburetors. A full-flow oil filtration system with an
auxiliary front oil cooler keeps oil temperatures in check with the
increased power, and a CSP electronic distributor with a custom
curve provides accurate, maintenance-free operation. Upon
completion of the 356 engine, it was put through its paces on
Willhoit's dyno, confirming power of nearly 170 horsepower and 160
lb-ft of torque, providing this Outlaw 356 with an exhilarating
powerplant for an unmatched driving experience. Once the engine was
returned back, Canepa's fabrication team modified a
high-performance muffler and added twin exhaust tips for a sporty
exhaust note, perfectly fitting of the 356 and looking perfect out
back with the Carrera rear valance. The finishing touch was
high-temperature Cer...for more information please contact the
