Vehicle Description
1958 Chevrolet Biscayne 2 Door Hardtop
"'58's real eye opener is Chevy! And that's a fact. You never saw
so much sharp engineering, so many advanced ideas, such stunning
changes, packed into one year's progress. You'll spend hours
studying this one and never run out of surprises. For '58, Chevy's
new from the paint on in, and that means body, suspension, chassis,
engines, the works! Sure, they're lovely to look at. But come on
down and get the real eye opener, the inside story!" From one of
many 1958 print ads, a particularly prolific year for Chevrolet
marketing.
For consignment, a 1958 Chevrolet Biscayne 2 door hardtop showing
45,999 miles but the true miles are unknown. "Ran when parked" is a
common utterance in the classic car world and applies to this car
which last trolled the roads in 2005. So, this presents an
opportunity for some restoration and to what level you take it is
up to you but the classic lines and 50's style make this a
candidate worth saving.
Exterior
Before we address the condition, can we just step back and
appreciate the lines of this car, from the heavily browed quad
headlights which are mirrored by the marker lights below, to the
curved glass and hefty window trim bookending the pillarless
greenhouse, to the body trim that runs the midline but also rides
the rear fender and wraps around the tail lights. Fantastic! White
paint covers the car which in our eyes, presents as a "clean slate"
on which to get creative. And while there's not much more
creativity in the two tone colors that usually adorned Biscaynes,
certainly, the sky's the limit here. In terms of condition, there
are dents, dings, scratches, and chipped paint. And there is some
rust particularly on the drip edge of windows and the lower edges
of the door and rockers. Some of it, but certainly not all, has
rusted through in spots, but it will all need attention. The
14-inch American Racing Torque Thrust wheels are oxidized and also
present opportunities for powder coating or replacing
altogether.
Interior
We will call this barn find condition as door panels will likely
need to be replaced and the split bench as well, all in blue and
white vinyl which is intact enough to inspire future design if
going back to original appearance is the choice. Despite the
condition, it's especially 1950's and the rear bench, though dirty,
looks intact. A three spoke steering wheel is pure patina and is
mated with an aftermarket tachometer mounted on top of the dash
with a shift light attached. The instrument cluster itself looks to
be of original design and looks like it could clean up with some
elbow grease since metal and paint were used in the 50's instead of
soft materials, and the blue paint on the rest of the dash is just
dusty. There's some surface rust on the uncoated floor and the door
sills and a racy aftermarket shifter rises from the transmission
hump. Some substantial corrosion is noted in the footwell by the
pedals and the white headliner is consistent with the surrounding
condition, showing age. The enormous trunk is unlined and has some
surface rust while playing home to the battery.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a 327ci V8 with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor
and lots of red accenting that includes the valve covers, fan
pulley, fan, and alternator. Headers are heat wrapped, and the fuel
pump looks cleaner than the rest of the components in the bay,
although the painted blue inner fenders look like they'll clean up
just fine. A TH400 3-speed automatic transmission is on board which
sends power to a Ford 9" in back and drum brakes are found on all
four corners.
Undercarriage
Consistent, corrosive surface rust covers nearly every square inch
of the underside and there's quite a bit of invasive rust, often
referred to as "Swiss cheese" in the hobby and that appears on body
braces, inner panels, and other light metals underneath. The dual
exhaust flows through chambered mufflers before turning sideways
and exiting in front of each rear wheel. Suspension consists of
coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs in back.
Here's the uncommon non running project available at Classic Auto
Mall in true barn find condition. If you've read this far, we know
the wheels are already turning about what this can become. Looks
like it was a street racer some time ago and it's epic lines lend
itself to any number of interpretations your imagination can
conjure. Grab some tools and don't forget the welder and get this
classic back on the road!
