The SL variant of the Mercedes Benz, also known as the R107, was
introduced in April 1971. The North American market was key for
these personal luxury cars where nearly two thirds of their
production would end up being sold. In the 80's more powerful
versions started being made and interestingly the 500SL is actually
not available to the US. This required many customers to acquire
the cars through the gray market and convert them to meet Federal
mandates. This option was eventually eliminated by Congress in
1988. The most powerful version available in the US was the 560SL
which was produced from 1986-1989. This 1987 is a nice solid car
and painted in a Gloss Black. It has both its removable hardtop and
the Black soft top. All of the original style chrome accents and
trim pieces are in place with a nice finish. The glass is all good
throughout and tinted. The car rides on a set of 16 inch chrome 7
spoke wheels with Goodyear Assurance tires.
As indicated by the 560SL name this car is powered by the largest
motor available, the 5.6L. The motor is paired with a 4 speed
automatic transmission and runs well. The suspension, brakes, and
drive train are all very stock.
The interior of the car features Black upholstery and is in good
condition. It has dual bucket seats and you will note there is no
rear seat which was a common factory ordered feature. The dash of
the car is mostly stock but an aftermarket Kenwood stereo has been
added as well as a CD changer. It has all of its stock wood grain
trim and a carpeted dash pad has been put in place to keep it
protected. The trunk is nicely carpeted and offers plenty of extra
storage space.
This car was previously in Arizona prior to coming to Texas and it
has a total of 91,132 original miles.
