Vehicle Description
1940 Ford Deluxe Tudor Sedan
"The only place you'll find 8 cylinder performance is in an 8
cylinder engine. That's why the Ford V8 stands alone in the
low-price field! You can read about Ford performance, you can hear
about it from please and proud Ford owners, or you can feel it for
yourself. It's most fun, first hand. See what this big car really
has under its hood. Test it in traffic, on the hills, or out where
the roads run long and straight. We hope you'll be hard boiled
about it. We know what this car can do, because we built it." From
a 1940 Ford print ad.
For consignment, a 1940 Ford Tudor Sedan, showing 13,102 non actual
miles. A car that was obtained as a roller and lovingly built with
period pieces, reproduction period correct items, new parts, and
even custom made components. It's a veteran of the show circuit
having racked up a number of first place wins and podium spots over
the past 20 years.
Exterior
It's not just bright red, it's DuPont's Boyd Coddington Red, a
paint developed by the world renowned late hot rodder, and it looks
fantastic on this '40 Ford! With a pointed locomotive front end and
arching rear, the profile epitomizes the era and stands the test of
time as a classic. The wide fenders gleam brightly, reflecting
light from above, while the straight panels are accentuated by the
polished trim on the shoulder line. Out back, Corporal badge shaped
tail lights flank the extensive, smooth door to the luggage
compartment under the rear split window. Swinging back up the
front, the hood trim on the nose is spectacular as are the vertical
grille slats, and chrome headlight bezels with deco style trim on
the marker lights. More bits of artistic goodness can be found on
the Wheelsmith Custom wheels, 14-inch in front and 15-inch in back,
painted red to match the car with silver beauty rings and embossed
hubcaps inside of wide white walls. Wow! Brightwork and paint are
fantastic and we could find now exterior flaws on this show
winner!
Interior
Column stitched saddle leather is enhanced on the door with a
horizontal red accent that bleeds into the armrest, all under the
red painted window frame and over a narrow carpeted kick panel. The
beautiful bench seat also wears saddle leather and is well
paddedand flaw free and the inviting rear bench is in equal
condition, enjoying wonderful red trim on the side wall and window
frames. A 3 spoke wood rimmed steering wheel is a dramatic
introduction to the clean dash housing AutoMeter gauges that
received all new wiring when installed and present at the end of a
polished steering column. Lipstick red covers the rest of the dash,
save for the center polished grille, and hovers over a heater box
that's adorned with pinstriping decor. The foot wells are
wonderfully lined in saddle leather and flank low pile tan carpet
under a pristine perforated headliner. In back, the trunk is
completely finished in the same materials and design and holds a
battery box and Ford insignia, show ready!
Drivetrain
The 1940 ad was right, it's a V8 under the hood, but pedestrians
could not have dreamed about this gleaming beast, the 350ci that
resides in place, topped by an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and
chrome dress up pieces with the air cleaner, valve covers, pulleys,
alternator, and belt cover. A TH350 3-speed automatic fits behind
it and sends power to the Ford 8" axle in back. Brakes are
configured as discs in front and drums in the back.
Undercarriage
Don't forget the floor mirrors when you bring this car to show
because the underside is a feast for the eyes with lots of bright
red components, spotless metal and a complete lack of dirt, grease,
and rust. The frame is uniformly black and dual exhaust flows
through it, meeting FlowMaster mufflers on the way, terminating
with chrome tips out back. Suspension includes a transverse leaf
spring up front with leaf springs in the back coupled with a sway
bar and Anco adjustable shocks. Because it's our job, we note a
drop of oil or two on the flywheel cover, which does not detract
from the overall cleanliness of the underside.
Drive-Ability
It's immediately apparent that the interior is a very nice place to
be, long before you start up the GM power plant. Once you do, this
red flyer comes to life with a healthy note and we rack the column
shifter into place and send it rolling on staggered size tires.
This beauty does not disappoint and delivers a smooth ride, good
visibility, power underfoot, and a trouble free lap around the
loop. All systems and functionality works as they should and we
steer this big car back to the mall so it can take its place in the
showroom. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
We've got that feeling again. The feeling that the attention to
detail afforded this car will not go unnoticed and that it will
likely not grace our halls long. She's a beaut', as dad would say,
and is a stunning piece of Americana with some modern touches and a
nuts and bolts expert build that shines through. This red ride is
ready for its next adventure, and perhaps more shows to
conquer!
