In the Automotive Hall of Fame, there is no doubt that Carroll
Shelby's Cobra is easily a first-ballot inductee. Beloved by
millions for decades, this majestic muscle car has been so lusted
after that we absolutely adore replicas like this 1965 Shelby Cobra
Backdraft Racing Edition. Built new in 2007, this two-owner car
shows just 18,709 miles on its odometer with a newer engine that
has just a fraction of that mileage used since it was installed in
this Indigo Blue PPG-painted Boulevard Bruiser.
Hop inside this two-seater, and you're treated to a
Spartan-yet-comfortable interior featuring soft-yet-supportive
black vinyl, four-point racing harnesses, and a three-point
wood-rimmed steering wheel that offers a splash of contrasting
color to liven up the otherwise utilitarian setup. A five-pod gauge
cluster sits center-mount on the dashboard while a single oil
pressure gauge is offset to the left of the steering column.
Mapholders on each door panel are about as much of an amenity as
this no-frills fire-breathing roadster can muster up, while the
Cobra emblem shifter knob reminds you why.
Under the signature front-hinged hood, we find a version of Ford's
venerable 302 cubic inch V-8 engine, built by Midland Machine in
Midland, North Carolina, in 2016. Featuring aluminum cylinder
heads, a hydraulic cam, roller rockers, a single four-barrel 650
cfm Holley carburetor, and a set of long tube headers that lead to
those bellowing side pipes, this powertrain goes a long way in
living up to the legend. That power is routed through a T5
five-speed manual transmission before being sent out to a set of
seventeen-inch wheels shod in massive 315/35ZR-17 rear Mickey
Thompson tires, while a narrower set of 235/45R-17 units handling
steering duties up front.
This 1965 Shelby Cobra Backdraft Racing Edition benefits from being
built more than thirty years after the original car it is modeled
after. A fully independent front and rear suspension borrowed from
a BMW 3-Series, along with a set of four-wheel power disc brakes,
helps this car perform exquisitely when turning or stopping. Also
included is the factory buildsheet and Backdraft booklet to make
its next owner feel like the first.
