Vehicle Description
1955 Chevrolet 150 Sedan Delivery
For consignment, a 1955 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery, showing 69,622
miles which are not actual. This is rare in the sense it's a one
owner car, bought new in 1955 by the consignor's father in New
Holland, Pennsylvania, used as a work truck until 1980 and the
recipient of a frame off restoration in 2002. We'd be surprised if
there were more than a handful of original owner Tri-Fives in the
country, let alone an already uncommon Sedan Delivery!
Exterior
Seamist Green is the color of choice here and it's a fine one, a
light aqua that flows over the large panels of the wagon with all
the glistening of an ocean at sunrise. With the body trim removed
and the rear paneled, the car takes on an even larger profile and
accentuates the contrasting chrome hood ornament that is like a jet
launching from an aircraft carrier. The Ferrari inspired grille
gapes over an epic chrome bumper that conforms to the shape of the
car with the light rings playing a supporting role adding gleam to
the front end. There's a shiny show out back too in which a more
modest rear bumper reflects its surroundings, picked up by some
tail light trim and extended through the dual chrome exhaust tips
that stretch beyond the bumper. 15-inch steel wheels are color
matched and the hubs are protected by dog dish covers. Other than
some minor gap imperfections, the exterior shows no major flaws,
including the metalwork which is excellent.
Interior
Taupe vinyl panels sandwich tan cloth on the door panels which is
not only a nice contrast to the seamist, but a handsome design,
simple and elegant, adopted by the front split bench which is
flawless. Even the dash retains the taupe/tan design in a design
option that works, topped off by a taupe 2 spoke steering wheel
that is showroom fresh and belies the hard work this wagon once
performed. An AM radio is present along with vent controls backed
by a metal plate, and the wagon maintains the double fan design of
speedometer and accent piece notable in Tri-Fives. Black loop
carpet covers the floor in the cabin while a charcoal piece covers
the entire cargo area which is lined with tan walls under a
stitched headliner, all in great shape.
Drivetrain
A modern battery and some clamps are the only thing that veers from
the original presentation of the 265ci V8 under the hood, clean and
show ready and rated at 162 horsepower. It has a 2-barrel
carburetor and is backed by a 3-speed manual transmission, shifted
on the column, and sending power to the rear wheels and 3.70 gears.
Drum brakes occupy the front and rear wheels.
Undercarriage
Pulling in much of the taupe paint, the underside looks like a
fresh restoration and has been well maintained these past 22 years
as it is super clean. What's not taupe is black or in the case of
the exhaust, clean metal. That exhaust is true dual from the
engine, running into stock style mufflers before exiting via chrome
tips. Suspension consists of coil springs in front and leaf springs
in back. You could eat off the bottom of this car as the only fluid
we find is behind a wheel hub. There is zero rust.
Drive-Ability
We prime the 2-barrel with a tap of the long pedal and she sparks
to life without complaint. Off we roll onto the test loop where we
first note a whine in 1stand 2nd gears coming from the
transmission. Beyond that, the car delivers good performance with
decent power, straight tracking, and good braking. It takes a
minute to get used to the tunnel vision of visibility, but it's an
easy adaptation but many generations from today's 360 cameras in
cars. There's no passenger side mirror to help, so it's probably
best to avoid parallel parking, no matter how handy you are! This
simple, straight forward car's functions all work as intended.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
It's a strikingly beautiful car with lots of presence and unique in
many ways. And you'll have bragging rights to being only the second
owner of this 1955 Chevrolet. Like a forged Craftsman wrench,
that's pretty strong stuff!
